THE Pinus Focal Point Recommendations

Hi Folks -

I am looking for recommendations for Pinus cultivars that would serve as great focal points in my North Carolina Zone 7A garden. I have a couple of sets of criteria for two different cultivars:

Cultivar #1) Deep, dark green coloration. A tree, not a dwarf. Taller than wide. (Not necessarily fastigiate, though, but that's OK.)

Cultivar #2) Bluish/silvery needles in a tree form. Taller than wide. (Not necessarily fastigiate, but that's OK.)

Unique characteristics are added bonuses to the above, such as beautiful candles, huge cones produced abundantly, long needles vs. thick needles, etc.

Maybe Bosnian pine for the first and Vanderwolf's Pyramid' limber pine for the second.

For an NCSU page with links to profiles of multiple pines apparently thought suitable for North Carolina...

Vanderwolf is a leggy specimen wih old age... check out the net, it's an unattractive tree.

I'd say off the top of my mind:
Bosnian sounds awesome
#2 Pinus koraiensis Anna (sold thru Gee's). The original tree is about 35 minutes from me. I'll snap a photo this spring. It was named for the late Anna Harper by the late, Chub Harper. It's beautiful. Extraordinary. Huge cones; long dark blue with silver undersides/needles; larger-growing and perfectly symmetrical/pyramidal.

is the Pinus densiflora 'Sunburst' the same as 'Taylor's Sunburst' ===>>> not in any sense of the word ... TS is a spring bud yellow.. the others are winter yellow.. besides the obvious that they are not in the same pine family ... since TS is a contorta .... that said... winter yellows are yellow in winter .. and green in summer.. aka.. boring in summer ... i doubt there is any significant summer difference between any of them ... to normal humans.. as compared to us here.. lol ... i would go with the cheapest of the lot.. and skip the name game ... i would also wonder if any plant with the name POINT.. is all yellow needled.. or just the point???? otherwise i have no knowledge about the one you ask about ... there are a few mugos with just yellow tips.. maybe pal maleter or per golden .... if i recall correctly ... and that is questionable [my recall i mean] ... there is also p. m. aurea.. which is turning into one of the better ones in my yard ... and probably.. based on the old latin name.. older than dirt .... ken

Fori- Thanks for the link. I like the idea of putting an induction hob in a subtle location. I actually considered using a smooth electric or induction in a "Hutch style" setup with a wall oven in the pantry or underneath the cooktop with pocket doors like those made by yestertec. DH really would prefer more of a focal point. Igloo- I'll be interested to hear how you like your Legacy. I know it for a future rental, but if I remember correctly you'll be living there temporarily. Which handles did you order? I like both options, DH doesn't like the spiral. We'll probably end up with the Legacy, but I'm am still so drawn to the cast iron of the 6-4 and the traditional AGA. Here is a link that might be useful: Yestertec

Do you mean Picea glauca 'Pendula'? If so, the shape is a narrow spire with a bluish hue. It will stay within a width of 4 feet for many years, and if you allow 6 feet, much much more. 10 year width is given at 2 feet only. How much space you allow for a tree depends on how long you want it to fit into your garden, or give you the look you are going after. A lot of us work with limited spaces, and plant knowing that one day we may have to take something out. Picea abies 'Gold Drift' is more of a free form conifer. It requires staking to go up, and will weep down from the point you stop staking it. At the ground level it will grow as a ground cover. It is possible to prune it to somewhat control the shape you want it to take. It is a fast grower for me in Maryland, more than a foot per year, though this year, only 8". That's the leader. The sides weep down, so has not become wide. I have ground cover at the base, so I have not allowed a skirt to form. You can have the design you are going after. Stake up gold drift as high as you want it, then allow it to weep down straight, or guide the leader sideways to come down in an arc to take a wider dome like form.

I did try various looks for the curtains, lowered the pull backs, raised them, allowed them to just hang; the way they are now is was what looked okay to me. As the room evolves, these ones may get swapped out; for now they'll be fine. I also tried a heavier white curtain with white dots in the fabric which was too much as well as a valance that was totally hideous. Ohmygosh, the table is incredibly useful!!! I'm a huge fan of small, versatile pieces of furniture like tables and benches that can easily be moved around if need be, so this one was ideal. Many tables like this have a bottom shelf which I'm much happier without.

On your Bosnian pine recommendation, are you recommending the species or a particular cultivar(s)?

Are there any Pinus thunbergii cultivars (larger growing) that are taller than wide, fully-clothed with dark green, thick needles?

Plantmarker, as far as a cultivar of Pinus heldreichii (leukodermis) fitting your description, you may want to check out 'Emerald Arrow'.

I have seen a large number of 'Vanderwolf's Pyramid' of various ages and sizes in person. Many pines become more open with age.

If I select Pinus heldreichii, I wonder if I should select the species and, if so, where can I order it from? No way to find it around here.

Hi Marker,

Pinus heldreichii is the taken over name for Pinus leucodermis.
I went on-line yesterday to see who
was selling it and forestfarm is offering both plugs
and 1-gallons 9.95 and 12.00. They sell it as
P. leucodermis.

I know nothing of Pinus thunbergii. Wish I could help.

Greer Garden sells several Pinus heldreichii. My selection P.h.'Compact Gem' is in the mail.

200 acre Oregon wholesaler Iseli lists and describes multiple Bosnian pine cultivars. Independent garden centers here may have more than one in stock at the same time.

I think I'm going to go with Pinus heldreichii 'Emerald Arrow' to go along with the Pinus koraiensis 'Anna' that I ordered last week. It looks as though it will fit the criteria very nicely. A local nursery has agreed to let me piggy-back an order for this cultivar along with their Fall 2010 order from Iseli. This way, I'll be able to get a larger specimen. I think Pandora's Box has been opened, though - what other specimens do I want from Iseli?! This could get ugly!

Dax, you're two for two with me now on your recent recommedations. The pressure is on!

Picea orientalis Early Gold - longest-lasting golden spring growth of any of the orientalis.

Pinus heldreichii Indigo Eyes - I really like this plant.
Pinus mugo White Bud - excellent golden spring flush too!
Pinu schewerinii Wiethorst

Chamaecyparis nootkatenis Jubilee

Pseudolarix amabilis

Thuja occidentalis Sherwood Frost

Thuja orientalis Collyer's Gold (Platycladus orientalis)

These would be on my list there Plantmarker!
