Yellow Thanksgiving Cactus In Full Bloom

So here's my yellow Thanksgiving Cactus that I've had for a while now, blooming right on time. It's early morning so the photo doesn't do it justice =)

I have only seen small pieces of it, and to see the whole thing is quite an honor!

Thanks, puglvr! It's maybe not as bloomy as the parents, but once I get it repotted and pruned next spring we'll see how it does then. If it doesn't shape up, out it goes. juliana, maybe we would have to do it after you get back, or try to fit in a mailing before you go. I have to look at the weather before May 15, but sometimes it can work earlier than that. Just remind me about it in April and we'll go from there. I'm thinking of repotting all my cc's and giving them a prune job, so it wouldn't be hard to put a couple of the trimmings in an envelope. Anyway, earlier would fit better for me if the weather cooperates. Once it's nice out, I had better be done with the fussing with the house plants because the acre veg garden calls.

Jodi, I must confess that I normally don't have much trouble with my "houseplants" so that I don't really know the "scientific measures" behind taking care of them. They just grow for me! I figure it all has something to do with the planting medium and the climate. I plant my CC in a soil-less medium, tree fern to be exact, and I water them whenever I water other plants. I leave my orchids, succulents etc. in a shade house to keep from too much rain/dew and sun and feed them once a month with NPK slow released fertilizer. Occasionally I foliage feed them too. In other words, I don't have special treatment for special species as I don't live where my plants are all the time and it's not practical to "train" my neighbors to care for my plants for me while I'm not there! I've read somewhere (Cacti&Succulent forum) that CC needs a difference in day & night temperature to set buds. Perhaps when you leave yours inside all the time, the temperature's constant so it doesn't bloom? Can you move it outside somewhere, like on your porch/patio? When I was in Calif before, I saw people left their CC outside, no watering at all or maybe very little watering, and the poor things looked so stressed, they dropped their segments, etc. But around Nov/Dec they bloomed! Of course, they didn't bloom as profusely as mine but they did bloom, I saw it! So may I suggest that you change the planting medium (soil-less) and leave the plant outside whenever you can? Hiya Cyirra and all, Congrats on the blooms! They're really, really lovely! I don't have any of the yellow/gold types so it's really fun to see yours. What conditions are you growing yours in? I still have the one in these older pics ('Dark Marie')--it's in my den right now and is budding up nicely (and making a couple of early blooms each week too). Here's a pic of one of the early blooms from this week, it will make its larger flush in a month or three. I've gone a bit overboard with Christmas cacti over the last couple of years, but they're so durable, and they love it here (indoors) and they bloom regularly for me (although often not until mid to late winter) so why not, right?? Here's a pic of a small rescue plant I got two years ago as an utterly wilted MESS with only five segments. Some bright light and occasional water have helped it revive. Thanks Tjicken. I knew the plant was old and the small teeth confused me of it being a True Christmas Cactus. I would believe you when you say it's an old cross. bama gardener, I noticed the same thing, When I bought my Yellow one with flowers the flowers were paler then they are this year! Thanks please continue to view this post in the upcoming days becuase I will have more Cacus that will open! I have 4 left to flower out of my 7, one is supposed to be White. This other one I was unknown of the color becuase the buds fell off before blooming last year, It looks as though it will be peach colored! the 3rd one is a Pink Thanksgiving Cactus. and the 4th is some Yellow colored cuttings I took last year!

It is just lovely!

I got a yellow one at Walmart several years ago, but it hasn't really grown and it doesn't bloom very much anymore. I'm trying to bring it back. From the looks of the buds on yours, it's going to be a beautiful display.

Mine is red and in full bloom...does this mean its a thanksgiving cactus too? Do colors define the seasons?

Very pretty.

I have some jungle cactus and I really didn't think there was a difference between them.

But I googled and found this article that explains it very well.

Hi Shauntavia...I believe I got my yellow TC from Lowe's a few years ago...also Hirt's sells the yellow one. The key to getting them to bloom yellow is keeping the plant during budstage as close to 68 degrees or warmer...apparently the colder its kept (while budding up) the less (yellow) shade it blooms.

I like the color on yours also...very pretty!

Greg, I can't believe the amount of buds your TC has. Beautiful.

Boothbay. Do you know your TC's name/variety? Definately, not a common TC. It's sooo pretty.

Shaunt...are the blooms lavendar and silver? Very nice.

Pug..WOW! Your TC has the yellowest buds and flowers I'd ever seen. Amazing..

Perhaps there is something to your theory keeping temps around 68F..

If I remember, I'm going to bring my Yellow TC indoors when temps are 70F or so next year. Gorgeous...

I've seen a lot of yellow TCs available this year at both nurseries and HD. The ones posted here are fabulous!

Wow, what beautiful TC you all have. Greg and pug, can you tell me the culivar?
I love how dark yellow they are. Mine is lighter. Very pretty but I sure would like to find a brighter yellow.
Mine was in about 67* budding up so I guess it got as dark as it will.
Do you all get a second bloom from your TC?
