Ideas for backyard slope?

I just saw the El Ceritto thread posted by caudex and it made me wonder if there's hope for this mess. It's a hot, dry, west facing slope and is currently covered with plumbago. Plumbago must die!, lol. I'm cleaning up and painting old dog-ear fence boards (golden yellow) and will be covering the chain length fence with them. The slope has gotten a little 'bumpy' over the years and I'd like to do as little dirt moving as possible. Seems like some groupings of cactus/succulents might look nice, but we don't know where to start. I'd appreciate it if someone could share some tips and photos. The tree at the top of the 3rd photo, straight up from the bbq is a pencil tree that we planted, too close to the fence of course, and it may have to be moved or a new one started. The slope is approx. 30 ft. high and 70 ft. wide. The pool is no longer with us. We sent it to pool heaven a year ago (yay!!). Linda
