Weekend Trivia --Saturday

Well I had a nice long sleep-in this morning, how about you? I woke up at 7:30, saw that it was a gloomy rainy morning, and just rolled over and settled back in-- pretty darn luxurious. I didn't roll out of bed until 9:23.

Enough about me. Today's trivia question may be simple for some of you ... or not. Let's see.

On this day in 1881 an baby was born that would go on to be an very famous and talented artist, whose style can often be easily recognized even by rubes like me. He died in 1973. Can you guess who he was?

Your self-descriptive statement 'bout threw me back to the wrong century, TM, LOL.

It's hard to pick an artist from the large number of well-known modern painters, but I know this one.

Hum, your very detailed description of the time in your Saturday morning and the hints at luxury led me to believe these were clues for today's trivia. So, how about Salvador Dali for an answer?

Four stars for Nancy and Bobbie. Yes, the link, probably intentional, is that Prof. Trelawney inherited the curse from her great-grandmother Cassandra Trelawney who must have been descended (fiction, remember) from the original Cassandra. She was cursed by Apollo when she did not return his affections-her gift of seeing was not taken away, but he cursed her so that no one would ever believe her predictions. That became a huge problem for the Trojans when they discounted her warnings about that giant horse outside the gates to the city. Hehheh. Anyway, despite being a bit of a fraud, Prof. Trelawney's predictions, like those of Cassandra, are never given any credence. Must have been frustrating. Thanks for playing. Hope you have a fun week. Here is a blurb from Wikipedia: TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a global set of conferences owned by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation, under the slogan "ideas worth spreading". And a nice hot Neo-Citran before bed - works like a charm and knocks me out. After a good sleep I usually feel better! It is a wonderful day here today. Sunny all day, bit of a wind - laundry dried like a charm. Even my jeans are almost dry! It's about 13C - sorry, don't have my decoder ring handy, but tomorrow will be cool and rainy, so the cats, even the pup and I are enjoying the outside!! The train, I believe, is named, slangily, for where the camels came from. Sorry about the dangle, my brain is mush to fix it!! Nancy.

Four stars for Annette, TM, Bobbie, and Nancy. Yes, the word ballot comes from the Italian word for ball which is palla. Pallotta is little ball. In the mid-16th century, it became ballot (middle French=ballotta-good ear TM) to refer to the small balls used for voting which would be placed in boxes indicating one's choice. Sunny and warm here. Temps are in the 80's.

Finished the painting of your sunflower field. Just need to coat it and I'll send it off to you. I'm not that good of a fine artist painter but I had fun.

All that comes to mind is Norman Rockwell.

I'll roll with Picaso.
It is rainy and grey here too. Kicked my butt outa bed, as I have a small wall in the kitchen to paint, but I'm still on the prep work - it would be quick, but for that!

Looks as if I wasn't the only one to 'pic' the right painter. When TM said, "rubes like me" I almost bit for Rubens, 14th century. Then Eduarda picked up on 'dallying' in 'luxury.' Were those intentional distractors, TM?

When you read my trivia questions, you never know if you're seeing clues or just the chatty ramblings of a feeble mind. When I saw what nice clues I had given for Dali, I wished that I had truly been that clever, but it was totally inadvertent. October 25th is actually Picasso's birthday. I also realized later that a lot of Picasso's paintings are probably NOT recognizable by rubes (another unintended clue) like me.

Nevertheless, Sierra, Sue, Annette, Nancy, Patti, and Nell all get for picking the right artist. Good job, ladies!

My knowledge of art is pretty much limited to "I know what I like". I thought the answer would be someone with one immediately recognizable style. Picasso's work seems to have encompassed many.

So I liked Norman Rockwell (except he was still alive after 1973 I think - a friend's Dad was a docent at the NR Museum in Stockbridge, MA). Also considered Magritte and Hopper.

One thing we can surmise from TM's clues: his bedside clock is probably digital.

Bingo, Ana! And you are, of course, right about Picasso having many styles. In my not-very-informed mind, I was picturing his wacky eyes-both-on-same-side-of-nose style. I don't know if that is part of the cubist style or exactly what, but it's what I always think of when I think of Picasso. I'm a little bit smarter about that now, though not much.

Edna - I'm really looking forward to seeing your sunflower field painting. Please post it as soon as you can.
