tab64, helpful and interesting comments about root die-off after repotting. Kent, rotting and shriveling up are a little different, and may have different causes. By "rot" I mean mushy and often stinky from bacteria. By shriveled, I mean desiccated, dried up. I mention that because the picture above might be showing both. Can't be sure because it's a little fuzzy. But I do see some dried-looking roots, and that could mean they aren't getting enough moisture from your dry mix. If you think that's what's going on, you may want to make your next watering a 20' soak, pot and all. The soak will re- hydrate the roots and the mix so it will be a little more water retentive. With such a dry mix, you may have to weight the pot down to keep it from floating. Phals do not like to be *wet*, but the roots should not be kept dry either. They want goldilocks condition, just moist. So a mix that stays too dry will dry the roots out. The newest, top root looks good. That's where your plant's long-term renewal and health will come from. Tab64's advice is good-- small bits of moist sphag near the good new root will keep the root humidified. Jane does this, too, especially in winter. I've found new roots often will grow right into the sphag on top of a mix. You don't mention your zone, but a north window isn't enough light to bloom a phal or to get good growth on it, either. An East, South or West window will be much better for it, especially as the winter comes on and the natural light fades. If you have an exposure other than North to put it in, you will help it thrive. Good luck.

I have several of these dendrobiums and usually find if they yellow immediately, it's the stress from the transplant. Were the roots in good shape and did you soak the media for a while before transplanting? I know they hate being cold and I live in Michigan so in the summer I place them in a sheltered area outside but have to bring them in before any of the other orchids in the fall. I've found mine seem to do better in a type of stone media rather than bark for some reason. I have them in pots with a lot of drainage holes in the sides and bottom. Old canes will die off and turn brown eventually but still give nourishment to the new parts of the plant so I leave them alone and don't cut them off. Not the prettiest with old canes thrusting out in all directions but they always bloom every year and sometimes twice a year. My oldest one is probably about 12 years old.

It's simply showing signs of stress... whenever you repot a plant, it gets stressed a little. It should bounce back just fine within a week. Pothos plants are very resilient. The only "bad" thing you did was water on a set schedule. It's better to water thoroughly when the soil has become mostly dry. This might mean twice a week, or once a month, depending on conditions.

Unless something really bad happened during the repot - like the roots dried out badly, I expect the plant to make a quick recovery, I have a F diversifolia I moved directly into full sun a couple of weeks ago. All it's leaves are going yellow and falling off. I'm not concerned a bit about it. Unless there's something seriously wrong with your medium or how you're watering, your tree should be fine. I'm not saying that to make you feel good - I'm saying that because that's what usually happens more than 9 of 10 times. Also, my diversifolia puts out figs non stop. If yours has figs, remove them. They are a strong energy sink and the tree will expend too much energy on maturing the fruit as opposed to growing new roots. Al
