Your TRUEST blues for bouquets

I have been trying to search this site for the TRUEST blues available.....but can't find a post that I saw a few years ago that gave specific suggestions.

I have:

Centaurea cyanus (bb)

Centaurea montana

Salvia Blue Bedder (but still too purple for what I need)

Stokesia Peachie's Pick (" " " " ")

Baptisia australis

Some blue siberian iris

(And possibly a blue hydrangea-with acid soil of course)

Any SPECIFIC larkspur/delphiniums/lupine that I could grow from seed?

Any other recommendations?

Phyl - The belladonna delphiniums, in particular Bellamosum, is a really intense, deep blue. Clivenden Beauty is very pale true blue. I also really like the mid-blue of Delphinium 'Clear Springs'. There is some variablilty but they are all definitely blue, not purple. I also like Clear Springs because they are not so tall as to require staking. I grow all these from seed and they will bloom a bit this year if you start them soon.

I'd add Scabiosa FAMA, Gentiana, and second the recommendations for Delphiniums!

Montreal area pickup only Large plant of Passiflora 'Blue Bouquet' large plant of Passiflora cincinnata I want to get rid of my mother plants before it gets too cold outside. Blue Bouquet - invasive, or should it be potted?

I have no experience with Blue Bouquet, so I can't speak directly to that variety, but a couple things to keep in mind: If you're growing this for butterfly food, the caterpillars will pretty much have it devoured by the end of the summer. Here in Texas, I had a few stragglers gnawing on bare stems into January, and your weather is milder in the winter than mine. Also, passiflora suckers aren't hard to control. Some, such as p. incense, sucker a LOT more than others. But even so, just mow or pull up. The roots are still there, but we're not talking running bamboo. Passis can do well in large pots, but they do much better in the ground. Good luck!

The foundation is primarily a ruddy smectite clay. While digging, there seems to be a large quantity of mica and a lesser quantity of rather small (quail-egg sized) pieces of quartz although brick sized pieces of quartz pop up from time to time. I originally tried using sand and a quantity of gypsum as an amendment with composted leaf mould, sphagnum peat, sawdust and manure as organics. Notwithstanding that I think it's the muckiest substance I've ever seen, the clay does seem to percolate a bit and Japanese irises nearby were severely injured. And a small mystery--moss has no difficulty growing on the surface even though I'd thought that iron sulphate (which I'd assumed was acidic) is used to kill moss. Performance is a mixed bag w/regard to plants situated in the native "soil". Certain peony varieties, notably the corals :), have in fact done better than some lactifloras I brought in from China. I routinely shuttle failing peonies in the autumn up to my parents' property which has actual soil. The tree peonies are a total crapshoot--certain Chinese varieties have entirely collapsed whereas other ones have produced gigantic blooms. The Japanese varieties do modestly well but increase of all the TPs has been consistently slow. Regarding other plants, I stopped vegetable gardening after the first year--not worth the effort; even quinoa failed to produce anything substantial. Lilacs have had a harder time acclimatizing to the clay than the peonies--they don't die, but they grow sparingly and many of them decrease--I did do a lot of amendment in particular for them and I got the soil in their holes up to 6.5 pH; of course, the holes are surrounded by a sea of acidic clay. I learned from a neighbour that the area in which I put the lilacs had been used to grow tobacco which is hard on the soil. With plenty of amendments, daylilies have done very well, although there is substantial variance in performance around the property. In digging up failing daylilies to ascertain what's going on below the surface, I found oftentimes that the daylily roots had only a tenuous hold on the clay and that most of their roots were situated in the mulch I'd put down. Consequently, I replace up to 70/80% of the clay in areas with daylilies. Such a large removal isn't feasible for the peonies, in large part because the quantity of mica is great enough to prevent digging much deeper than a foot with a spade and oftentimes the mica is encountered a mere few inches below the surface. Camellias have been removed entirely from the lot, since a season or two in situ and the poor things are nearly on their death beds. Similarly, rhododendrons fail, but kurume azaleas and flowering quince do well. Japanese maples do not thrive, but dogwood, Prunus mume, pin oaks and silver maple grow alright. That's about all I can summarize about the soil and performance in it. Oh--one anecdote: the water is acidic enough that distinct copper sulphate routinely accumulates on my shower walls, though there is very little other mineral deposit to be found (I assume the copper is being leached from my pipes).

Sara-Ann, your bouquets are amazing! Wow! I especially love the bright pop of yellow in a few of yours but they are all show stoppers! Here was my first bouquet from 2015, I see two Dick Clarks, a Black Baccara, a Folklore, and I think the two stripeys are All American Magics (if I remember correctly!) here is a single of Lady Diana, she is growing out front and my husband called one morning just as he was pulling out of the driveway to go to work and told me I had to go cut this pretty light pink one and bring it in the house :) Here is a single of Cherry Parfait I had to bring in Single of American Dream that I can't rotate, sorry! another I can't rotate, blah! probably my favorite bouquet of the season, with Paradise, Paradise Found, Neil Diamond, Cherry Parfait, American Dream and here it is with some giant Big Brother lilies featuring PJPII different stages of Double Delight Blue Girl and Candy Stripe, so fragrant together!! and lastly this one has Neil Diamond, Hypnotized, Brigadoon, Pop Warner and a pink that is probably Candy Stripe in back I think that was it for bouquets for me in 2015, I always have a hard time cutting roses from the bush because they look so beautiful on the bush but when I do I am always happy I brought some inside! :) Andrea

Sadly, iVillage seems to discard our posts after a certain length of time, or more likely, after the archive builds up to a certain storage size. Different forums have different numbers of pages that remain available for viewing -- I've seen as many as 67 pages on one, compared to the Cutting Garden's 24. The Cutting Garden Forum looks like it's cut off around April of '05, so I think that anything before that is a goner. Also, I believe if you "clip" a post it will only stay clipped until it is shoved off the bottom of the stack by iVillage. Kind of cheesy, if you ask me. Some other free online forums I know of keep users' posts forever.

Oh, well, at least it's free, but it would be nice to be able to refer to those older gems when you need to.

Climbing creakily down off the soapbox now.

I really like peach leaf bellflower--campanulas. Gorgeous blues. I could never get enough of them.

It is funny but I got a copy of Horticulture Magazine a few weeks ago. They had an article on 'blue' flowers. To a one, they were all lavenders, lilacs and such; cool purples. But I would have to stretch my imagination PRETTY FAR to call any of them BLUE. They should check out this forum instead. :O)

How about Blue Daze and Plumbago? I have both and they are gorgeous. I'm in East Texas if that makes a difference.

When I was a florist I used Delphinium belladonna year 'round because of it's fabulous color and lasting quality. Many of the other true blues just don't last well as cut flowers.

Just found this forum and am a blue-flower lover. My bluest is Delphonium 'Blue Elf'. Not your usual tall delphinium - shrub-like, 18 inches tall and filled with blooms in mid-summer. Short-lived perennial.

Can anyone recommend sources for the delphinium seeds?

I admit, I haven't done a blowout search, but if anyone has a favorite vendor, I'd love to hear about it.

After years of admiring Delphiniums, I finally planted some I found for sale in a 4 pack! They actually survived and are on their 3rd summer. (NJ isn't known for it's friendly Delphinium climate)
I am now ready to experiment further and these blues sound fantastic.

ps - used to work for a greenhouse. Growers always called purple flowers "blue". Annoying, especially when I would hear of an exciting new Blue anything and it was just another lavender. Lavender is great, but not blue.

I feel your pain on the purples being called blue. I find a lot that are called red are really hot pink or magenta too. Not true red. It bothers me.
