Kyle: The leaf bud on peach is in the same position as on citrus. You should be able to see the buds at the junction of the leaf petiole and the stem. Often there are three buds. The outer two are flower buds. The center one is a vegetative bud. If only one, then that is vegetative. Use the peach wood from near the base of a vigorous current season shoot. Cut the leaf petiole off just above the bud and leave the stub. Use that bud as your scion when T budding. I'd wait until August to bud and force it next spring. George is doing pretty well.. he is bouncing back nicely. he is currently covered in flower buds and new branch buds. As soon as I can get a decent picture of him I'll be posting it.. most of the pictures I've taken of him you can't really see the new growth. When the buds grow out I'll snap some pics.. I have very limited grafting experience. I did the V-shaped grafts. Once I fit the pieces together, I pushed a large pin thru them horizontally to 'lock' them in place. Then used grafting film wrapped tightly around the union. One thing you need to do is make sure you keep the rain water off the graft and make sure it doesn't get moved much. If you have a greenhouse, that would be a good safe place for it, or maybe under an eave. Rainwater can work its way under the tape and cause rot. And you don't want birds landing on it. If you can do the bud grafts, you'll certainly have more scion material to experiment with. I've never tried them myself. Seems to me they might be 'safer' and not dry out as readily as the v-graft might.
