False loose smut??? Hmmmmmmmmm, sounds like something that lives behind my refridgerator. I really have no clue which is not a surprise...I rarely have any clue at all, lol.

We're expecting TS Hanna today. Its begun to rain harder now and the wind has picked up. My part of the eastern seaboard has been so blessed in past years regarding storms. Looks like the Gulf Coast may be in for yet another one (Ike) next week.

The seeds on Bahai grass leave a black stain that my MIL used to call 'smut grass' but I don't think that's what you're after.

MIL used to say that real smut (from a chimney) placed around hydrangeas would turn pink hydrangeas blue.

Sounds like a fungus of some kind, but I've no idea where it grows.

Geez, just when I thought you couldn't come up with anything harder!!!!! We had rain overnight, and the weather has really broken - cooler today. Maybe Gustav's last gasp, but I really am only paying attention to overnight temps at this time of year.

False Loose Smut!!! I wonder if it is something to do with an insect, that leaves what looks like a disease??!! Not a good answer. I need time to think about this one. I am off to meet my cousin at a Farmer's Market, in North Gower. I hope to pick up some nice veg to do salsa, more pickles, and maybe some pickled beets. I am way too ambious this am!

Smut is the black fungus type stuff which can be found at the top of some ears of corn. It is considered a delicacy! I hope you are feeling better, TM!!

I was going to guess corn. There's some kind of smut that grows on it and is considered a delicacy, maybe false loose smut is one that doesn't taste so good? But Nell says it's not corn, so I'm stumped.

I was hoping my hint about not being beans, oats or peas, would make someone think of the children's song Oats, Peas, Beans and Barley Grow. False loose smut would be found on barley. Good job, Nell, with your John Barleycorn song.

From cobwebbed reaches of memory: 'corn' is a generic term for any grain in Olde English. And what we in the States/Canada relish on the cob was, until recently, considered only fit for animals in Europe. Of course, they said the same thing about lobsters.

Yea, Ana, you are right about corn being a generic term for cereal grain. Everbybody else calls the grain, we know as corn, maize. The contracts for indentured servants in The Colonies sometimes had clauses limiting how often the employer could feed the indentured person lobster--only the poor ate lobster. How times have changed!
