Lithop seedlings

I bought some lithop seeds on ebay. 2 sprouted today and im expecting alot more. no that 2 have sprouted what should i do. i got them in a mcDonalds salad container. should i remove the cover now or what.

No rush to remove the lid, they should be fine under there for a few weeks. Remove immediately if you get any rotting or fungal problems. I keep them well watered until the first true leaves come through. Provide strong light, ideally direct sun once the lid is removed, but don't let them overheat.

Will a Overheat light work, its winter now. not enoguh lite outside

i agree with you there about mesembs seemingly being every pests favorite dish. I have read where these lithops can make great house plants....so im going to try that out...my room has a south facing window, so lighting wont be a problem, and i have a bit of protection for them with my blinds if it gets too strong for them. Hi Succulent _son, I have grown Lithops from seed a few times and from my experience I believe it is normal for the seedlings to topple over as they grow due to how shallow the seeds are sown (I sprinkled the seed on top of the soil then lightly sprayed them in with water). I have tried both methods you mentioned however my best results were from leaving them to grow and develop their thicker skins before handling them. I found that I had a higher incidence of rotting bases if I surrounded them whilst they were too young. If you decide you want to straighten them up I think adding a little grit for support is the better option as you have less chance of damaging the fragile developing root system. Good Luck :)

Hello Maria, Just close the bag and leave it be for now, just make sure there is enough moisture. You can replant the seedling when they get strong enough, I suggest to wait at least until first true leaves emerge after first shedding. Happy growing :)

I see this is an older thread , but i also have a tough time deciding when to water them as they transition to teens/adults :) There's a guy on YouTube just named Lithops who has some good videos about how he waters his many lithops seedlings.. just interesting to watch how other ppl do things.. I've read that when they're in that stage you can water to help them grow/break through and they'll still absorb their old bodies. Which I've done with some and had pretty good luck. The 2 bigger square pots are mostly treated like adults, while the 5 smaller pots still wrinkle and get watered more frequently than fully grown ones. It's definitely been interesting to see them develop.

Yes, the gro-lux (I think they're called) will keep them warm and give needed light but don't put it too close.

Overheat? Overhead? Get one of those spiral energy saver bulbs and stick it above the pot for 12-16 hours a day. Or put it under a fluorescent light that is going to be on most of the day.

lol, woops i meant overhead. can i leave it on at night?

No, Lithops have a metabolism that requires a period of darkness. Without it they will eventually die.

I also got lithops seeds from ebay several times. Sometimes it takes longer for the stragglers to come up.
just dont over water them

Well they sprouted, but now they look a little tall. they don't look like they are compact to the ground. how can i make them fatten up
