Weekend Trivia - Sunday

Good morning and happy weekend, my friends. IÂm going to go straight to the trivia question today with no dillydallying, since time is a bit short for me.

The topic is inventions, the man is Marcel Grateau (or maybe Francois Marcel, accounts vary), and the year is 1872. His invention involved heating two iron implements over a flame and using them to effect a certain change that many people liked very much and were willing to pay for. Surprisingly, now that we are in the twenty first century, not that much has changed and IÂm sure M. Grateau (or M. Marcel) would totally recognize the modern version of his invention.

Can you guess what he invented?

Must have been tricky, my mother used strips of rags on me.
We are having another storm here this weekend. The rain is most welcome but the wind will be an issue for all the tall ships in the harbour. Martha

Brilliant Bobbie - our Wordsmith!! Yes, it was Buddy Holly!! It was a pretty sad story, with which we are all aware!! The Phil Everly connection surprised me, just a little. Holly's funeral was held on February 7, 1959, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Lubbock. The service was officiated by Ben D. Johnson, who had presided at the Hollys' wedding just months earlier. The pallbearers were Jerry Allison, Joe B. Mauldin, Niki Sullivan, Bob Montgomery, Sonny Curtis and Phil Everly. Waylon Jennings was unable to attend due to his commitment to the still-touring Winter Dance Party. Holly's body was interred in the City of Lubbock Cemetery in the eastern part of the city. His headstone carries the correct spelling of his surname (Holley) and a carving of his Fender Stratocaster guitar. All pallbearers save Everly were or would be, Crickets. MarÃÂa Elena Holly did not attend the funeral, and has never visited the gravesite. She was pregnant at the time of the crash. She miscarried the day after learning of his death, reportedly due to Ã¢ÂÂpsychological traumaÃ¢ÂÂ. Because of this incident, authorities found it necessary, in the months following, to implement a policy against announcing victims' names until after families had first been informed. Seems like common sense, but I guess the 'need to know' superseded that! I hope you are all staying warm in the deep-freeze - we go from -2C at lunch today to -32C overnight. Yikes. Ha. Too easy for all of you smarties! So, as I am sitting here instead of cleaning as I really should be doing, I am watching American Masters. The subject is JD Salinger. Fascinating. The fourth anniversary of his death is tomorrow. That would have been an amazing trivia question---whose writing prompted three murders? Who was the author who carried the first six chapters of his signature work with him on D-Day? Whose most famous book was rejected by The New Yorker which felt one family with four such extraordinary and talented children was implausible? Who is due to have his final works released in installment beginning next year? Will they be master works? I am betting they will be. He has completed the history of the Glass and Caulfield families apparently. There were so many interesting tidbits. I think it is time to re-read Catcher in the Rye before the new works come out. I should also re-read Franny and Zooey. I remember liking it, but not much else. Cynthia

Sorry this is coming so late - busy, busy, and I went to bed early last night!! The answer is of course, holly. This is an archaic spelling. Ilex, or holly, a genus of 400 to 600 species of flowering plants in the family Aquifoliaceae, and the only living genus in that family. The species are evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs, and climbers from tropics to temperate zones worldwide. The prickly leaves represent the crown of thorns that Jesus wore when he was crucified. The berries are the drops of blood that were shed by Jesus because of the thorns. In Scandinavia it is known as the Christ Thorn. A vomitorium is a passage situated below or behind a tier of seats in an amphitheatre or a stadium, through which big crowds can exit rapidly at the end of a performance. They can also be pathways for actors to enter and leave stage. The Latin word vomitorium, plural vomitoria, derives from the verb vomeo, vomere, vomitum, "to spew forth." In ancient Roman architecture, vomitoria were designed to provide rapid egress for large crowds at amphitheatres and stadiums, as they do in modern sports stadiums and large theatres. There is a common misconception that ancient Romans designated spaces called vomitoria for the purpose of actual vomiting, as part of a binge and purge cycle. According to Cicero, Julius Caesar escaped an assassination attempt because he felt ill after dinner. Instead of going to the latrine, where his assassins were waiting, he went to his bedroom and avoided assassination. This may be the origin of the misconception. The term vomitorium does not appear until the 4th century AD, about 400 years after Caesar and Cicero. Flower buyers should always show up TM. :)

Lets see:
1872 until today.

iron implements over a flame My first thought was flat irons. Or horseshoes. Or golf irons. But we don't use iron to make those anymore and I can't imagine people still using flame.

um.....(cast) iron cookware?
Perhaps the heat is now generated by gas or electricity. And implements are no longer made of iron.

How am I doing?

I am thinking it has something to do with hair. Either to flatten it if it's too curly, or to crimp it, to make that Roaring Twenties flapper wave. Or maybe just a curling iron?

Yes, I too would say hair curlers. I remember seeing these at the local museum as a kid!!

There used to be something called a "Marcel wave", which I thought was kind of a short, wavy hairstyle. So I'm guessing this guy invented an iron which produces this particular wave.

Hope your flower customers didn't whimp out on you today, TM!

Yup, I'll go with Patti and the Marcel waves. I think that word is still used by hairdressers/hair stylists today.

Maybe TM's dilly-dally was a clue. It's an old word still in use.

My answer is Electric Curling Tongs.

I had those $*%# rags in my hair every second or third night when I was small, they hurt when you had to sleep on them, needless to say my daughter never went though that torture. I'll go with a curling iron.

When I first read this trivia stumper early this morning ...

... after I re-checked the newspaper and determined that today is, indeed, Saturday and not Sunday (TM, please do NOT play games w/my head this way - I just can't take it!!)......

..... my first thought was that Orville Redenbacher really stumbled into something and I immediately thought of the two piece metal popcorn popper we used to use in the fireplace, but subsequent posts are indicating I'm way off base.

So, guess my answer is ' i dunno' ..... but I'm glad it's still Saturday. :o)

Sorry, ZZ. In my feeble defense, it was pretty early this morning and I had had only three sips of coffee at the time I clicked on the wrong subject choice. How about if I make tomorrow's subject Weekend Trivia--Saturday to make things even again?

Not a feeble defense at all, TM! Sometimes I need these wake-up/check-it-out posts to right myself! :o) Makes me feel good to scope them out and no offense or criticism intended ... :o)

Okay, I'll go quietly now .... tho' still waiting for the answer - seems popcorn is out, so I'm clueless.

I remember sleeping with my hair plastered around huge rollers, the size of juice cans. Before rolling you were supposed to slather it with Dippity Doo (Du?). I vote Marcel waves--today's curling iron? Debby

Are you sure you didn't give a clue, Thinman? You said "straight to the trivia question!" I thought curling tongs have been around a lot longer, so I was thinking of a hair straightening device. But I've heard mention of the Marcel wave too. Maybe he had to start a new trend to keep in business, so he can be credited with both?

I thought that a lot of you would recognize the name Marcel. His accomplishment was to create waves like these:

It seems fair to say that he at least was one of the people who created the first curling irons, so for Martha(?), DaWiff, Nancy, ProudGm,Patti, Libby, Annette, Debby, and Skibby. Also Nell and StageRat ... close enough.

I don't know what they make them out of now. My wife's looks like aluminum, and I've seen some that are chrome-plated, so they may be made of brass or steel, I suppose.
