What is its origin?

Tsuga heterophylla occurs in two distinct areas, on the Pacific Coast (SW Alaska to NW California), in zone 7-9, and a separate interior population in the Rockies (SE British Columbia to N Idaho and NW Montana), in zone 4-6.

If this cultivar is from the interior population, then you have no problem; if it derives from the coastal population, then probably not hardy.

Resin

Do any western hemlocks grow there? Would have to survive the total climate and soil combination, not just the winters. Specimens of this cultivar at outlets here quite expensive, I wouldn't waste the money unless you saw good indications it was likely to live.

Try a search, I think someone has posted about being able to keep one for a few years in the shade in another eastern state, albeit a more southern one.

Iseli grows it and I have no way of knowing where their stock comes from. I would suspect northwest origin but really don't know.

It's not the origin of a particular batch of stock that matters, it's the provenance of the cultivar. And while hardier than coastal origin plants the Rocky Mountain western hemlocks would still have to be able to tolerate the complete set of conditions wherever you are. I doubt the one you are asking about is from the interior anyway.

When you have two generally similar species in the same genus growing in two different parts of the same country (or continent), in this instance western hemlock in the western US (and Canada) and eastern hemlock in the eastern US, they may be related and have diverged from a common ancestor or contiguous population in the ancient past. The species existing in the western area and the eastern one today are the versions suited to modern conditions in those areas. When you move one to the range of the other it may not have what it takes to live there, being the wrong model, so to speak, for that application.

seedlings from California would these T heterophyllas be
Z9 hardy? I thought this was a zone 5/6 species as its an
ornamental in temperate and colder climates.

claymont, I'd love to hear how your Thorsen's Weeping Hemlock is doing. Can you give us an update?

I'm curious if anyone's grown the Thorsen's Weeping Hemlock long term outside of it's native environment.
