OT keep me away from Woot

I'm back home but can't stop. I'm better off in warm weather so I can be outside playing in the dirt instead of inside on the computer. I bought the Woot special today also. It's a Kodak Easyshare V803 8 Megapixel Digital Camera and a Kodak Easy Share 5100 All-in-One Printer/Scanner/Copier bundle for $149. I've used the camera and like it and DS needed a new printer. This way he gets both. They are decent quality for what he needs and a great price. At least he doesn't need a pink camera! LOL I'd forgotten about Woot and for some reason took a look for the first time in a year the other day. I've bought 4 of their offerings in the past week and just found out that there's also a WineWoot. I love a good merlot or cabernet : )

PS: Woot.com is a site that has a new deal every 24 hours and the price of whatever they are offering is usually ridiculously cheap. Everything comes with full warranties. Some products are refurbs and others are new. They specify in the product description what it is.

It's generally just for woody plants (shrubs/trees) where this is important more-so than annuals or veggie plants. It's not the fact a few pieces of mulch is touching that's the issue as much as a thick mulch or a pile of mulch settled up against the plant can hold moisture against the bark as well as decrease oxygen into the soil. A few pieces of mulch against the plant (even a woody plant) won't hurt that much...a lot of mulch or a pile is a different issue.

I live on the North Shore of Long Island. I have (or should I say had) 2 1/2 acres of garden including prize winning day lilies, irises, hyrdrangeas. Now all I have is barren weed-caked soil and deer. Tonight I saw my one remaining Casablanca lily bud which was on a stone patio up a flight of six steps outside my dining room doors -eaten. The deer have eaten every flowering shrub, yucca spikes, geraniums, roses, balsam even sedum and portulacas. There is nothing they don't devour. The shame of it is that nothing deters them. I have a very expensive Deer Tech sonic deterrent system which costs me $3500 to install and $2800 a year to maintain. The deer browse right next to the units. I have used soap, pepper, liquid fence, deer off, bobcat urine, blood meal, milorganite, garlic, perfume oils to no avail -the deer consider them a condiment. Recently, I started spending 1 hr each evening and again in the morning wrapping and unwrapping each lily bud in gauzy row cover fabric and fastening it around the stem so it looked like a lollipop. The deer simply ate right through it. Next I encased each lily bud in a freezer weight zip-lock bag -again they chewed right through it and ate the bud. I am close to tears each morning when I visit my garden and see that there is no single blossom left. I used to look out my kitchen window to a sea of lilies. This summer the forest rats robbed me of the joy of seeing even a single flower. My border of phlox are gone and the replacements lasted one evening. My husband and I became infected with babesiosis and he almost died from it. I had $6500 damage to my car last fall when I hit one. I am sick of this infestation -they are nothing but vermin and the environment is suffering as a result. The new saplings are being destroyed and the understory plants that are home to small mammals, quail, pheasants and other birds are being denuded. During the rut, bucks can become vicious. One attacked my gardener and tried to gore him. He made it into his truck only to have the buck ram the truck damaging it to the point that it was undriveable. We feel like we are under siege. We are in the process of stringing 8' high barbed wire fencing around the perimeter of our property. Can you imagine living in a formerly lovely property that now looks like a prison? Deer are a national epidemic that are causing environmental, economic, public health and safety catastrophes. Suddenly Bambi is no longer cute. Our community has authorized culling -3 blinds and infrared cameras will be installed to track the deer and hunters will have access throughout the year. 21 deer were culled from my neighbor's yard just last year...that is the level of our populations. We also have albino deer because the herds are getting inbred. If anyone can figure out a solution -they should get the Nobel prize!

You could plant it in a hanging basket, or you could plant regular Catnip in an area away from your Catmint. It has a stronger scent than Catmint and would attract the cats first. However, Catnip is sometimes called Catmint, so you need to determine if what you have is really Catmint. Catmint will indeed have a more minty scent, whereas Catnip will have an almost skunky odor. Find some Catnip(that maybe a friend or neighbor has) or go to a nursery that has both and do a scent comparison.HTH

Loretta, at the risk of being chastised for hijacking the thread ... If it is squirrels in there, they most likely will not go away until spring, when they and their babies (raised in your attic) will move back to their summer home. In the meantime, for their winter nest they'll make use of anything you have so thoughtfully placed up there for them: boxes, fabric (they seem to particularly like Barbie clothes), fiberglass insulation ... shavings from the electric wiring insulation (guess they like a little texture in their bedding). The babies, having been born and reared inside, will think that's their rightful place and, like salmon, will be determined to return every winter to your - or a neighbor's - attic. They will chew through walls to do so. They literally tore out our soffit vents and when we secured those they chewed through the cedar shakes, vapor barrier and sheathing to get into the house. I used to think squirrels were cute ... now I have to agree with my husband: they're tree rats. Please don't ignore them. Diane

Save some for after Christmas. I thought I was done until Guitar Hero III bundle got canceled by newegg today. GRRRR It had a cool Les Paul. I do not like video games but this is a cool one for my son. Non vegetative game.

Hoping my camera gets here soon. Everything wants to bloom and we almost had a freeze. I would like to take some pictures with the macro. My KGW decided it did not want to die so it is putting on a show. It has turned out to be a bloomer. 12 inches across. Wow...........Not to be outdone the plumeria decided to get into the show. I have been hardening them off and they liked it. Kind of hard when it goes from cold to 80's in a few days.

When it is too cold to go outside. I do online trading or shop the internet for the best deal I can find. I do not like it. If I lived up north I would have to hibernate. The internet would call me JImmmm, Jimmmm hurry the deals are passing you by.The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys....

Jim the guitar that comes with the GH III bundle isn't as good as the other guitar controller, at least that's what I've heard from a whole slew of 13 + 14 yr old boys (DS and his friends). The good thing is that the guitar from GH I + II can be used with the game but the game cannot be purchased separately yet. BTW it's a balmy 19 degrees this morning and yes I am hibernating!

lmao, I know where you are comin from my dear woman, I had the Woot bug for over a year! checked it every day, constantly buying stuff. Some damn good deals on there. Finally I had to take control and haven't been back since, lol. I think DH was ready to kill me..I was constantly like "O look, let's get this! O look let's get 3! 1 for each kid, it's so cheap!" lol.
Good luck with that addiction! AND SSHHH!! DON'T TEMPT ME!!! LOL!

No, I didn't buy anything today, but I was tempted. lol I'd ordered that r/c helicopter for DS on Sat and was going to save it for his bday in March. I got an email from Woot today saying that they were afraid that it wouldn't get here by the weeks' end so they are shipping it Fedex Express! I'm not going to complain. Shipping is always $5 no matter what you order. It could be 5 oz or 50 lb. I wonder if they'll have any cool yard/garden stuff in the near future?

lol, you didn't buy but you are still loooking lol. Yeah shipping on there is awesome..you can't beat that. OO if you see they have any cool gardening stuff lemme know! I refuse to go on there and check every day..too dangerous!

We have the guitar hero 1, 2 and 80's on ps2. Then we got GH 3 on the xbox 360. I don't know who likes it more me or the kids LOL! So I got them Rock Band for xmas :)

SJN, I like to watch them play. I got GH 3 for the xbox 360. Delivery is Friday and all stuff is in. Whew... what did we do before online??????? Just did about 100 NBJ's and 25 brugs direct to ground. We will see. LOL I hate to pay retail. It does not hurt when you know there is nowhere in the US you could have bought it cheaper. Hey Jim, btw there are a few video games that involve gardening/plants...Viva Pinata and Harvest Moon are a few... I can't believe you planted 100 NBJs!!! You gonna start a nursery? Gonna be able to smell your yard a mile off, it will be hawkmoth heaven-but then that's a good thing lol.

Karen woot is cool but I need more. LOL I need my deal catcher. I am done shopping for Christmas but still checking. MS Zune $ 99.99 wow.

SJN just trimming up my plants. They Had limbs on the ground. One plant made 100+ I hate to throw anything away. I already had 15-20 pots filled with starts. What to do direct plant. I am sure at least 25% will survive. I stick them 12-18" deep so they have constant moisture. Might have to wear a gas mask at full moon or dig and give. I have had real good results using the Cut and plant. Too funny gardening games. "Brugmansia the Game" 1st person grower. (Big grin)

It wasn't Woot this time but the malls and Best Buy were open late tonight. I can't believe how many people were out shopping at 11 pm. Don't they have homes they are supposed to be at? lol Here I'm shopping like mad and my holiday is already over.
