Thats that best I can do in a nut shell. Cactus go dormant during the winter, you know whole books are written are each of these species. I just gave you very general information. I suggest that you look up each one, and don't water from the top. water at the soil line thoroughly each time you water use a pencil or chop stick to see if it need water, ( if the soil is dry)
Welcome to our hobby, study each species one at a time.
Succulents most of them are summer growers. if in doubt don't water, Rain most of them will take gladly. Then wait 10 days or until them dry out. Then water if you must. If the news says it's going to rain next week then wait, the plants are able to go months before they get their next water, that is what they do out in the wild. If they should get but just toss on ole dirty soapy dish water. Now keep asking questions or look back on old post. It's all there. Norma

You need to tell us which species you have. "Living Rocks" could be almost any dwarf mesemb. Aloes vary widely in their growth preferences.

As for the rest, if they originate in Southern or Southwestern Africa, they prefer spring and autumn growth, and summer too if its not too hot. Everything else goes dormant in the winter. But these are just generalizations.

Most plants will tolerate abuse for a long time, even years, then all of a sudden they die leaving the owner to question what went wrong. Most people blame a recent overwatering or insects, when in reality the conditions were properly unsatisfactory for an extended period of time and the plant could not tolerate it any more.

Jojo: I'm not sure what you mean by "gastrolea." I googled and got a species of aloe. If you mean gasteria, be careful about grouping that with plants that need a lot of direct, hot sun. The ones I have tend to get sunburn and need to be in filtered light or bright shade. Some of the "living stones" need shade as well.

Aside from dorstenia, I have all the genera you listed growing in the ground here in SoCal. For the most part, they don't seem to suffer if I give them year-round water. Some euphorbias can be tricky, and my semps are kind of hit-and-miss. Of course, I'm just generalizing here. You need to study up if you want to be certain.

Thank you for the help. I have everyone in part shade right now, a few in the house.

They will all be going in a green house in about a month for the winter.

The Lithops are a mix.. Only one is labeled. "Lithops Fulviceps"( a real nice pale blue!) which I got at arid lands, and talked to her today. Just got home from there and will try and post pics later. :)

ltecato- All the label says is Gastrolea hybrid. and yes, it does resemble an aloe. thick leaves, and white spots.

My aloes are all hybrids at this time. Mostly kelly griffins and one is a A. rauhii & A. divaricata.

Gastrolea is probably a misspelling of Gasteraloe, which is a gasteria/aloe hybrid.

Lithops care, click here. Since some species have different watering preferences, it is safer to separate them until you figure out which ones you have.

Your Aloes will grow pretty much all year except if it is too cold or too hot.

And my biggest question, How far back is considered an old book?

Ive been looking around ebay.. Some good looking books that are dated 2006.. Is that too old?

I know I need them, the internet is so scarce with good info.

Anything written by Gordon Rowley or Miles Anderson is pretty good stuff - Mr. Rowley has tended to specialize in recent years but Mr. Anderson (located in Arizona and a great dealer of plants, too) has soom good general books. For a general book that also has specifics, Mr. Rowley's general-succulent book is great.

A problem with a mixed container of plants is if you overwater one, you overwater all. I keep most of my cacti and succulents in separate pots so I don't kill them all at once! One at a time, maybe, but not all at once.

jojo, my Tylecodon are coming in leaf now, I have some with a caudex. These are extremely tiny plants even though they are at least 18 yrs old. They are winter growers. All of my Tylecodon are coming into leaf and are extremely brittle, and I should not have tried to put them into show pots, I would like to try and send you some cuttings, a few may be rooted. I will need your address, and I can only do this if you are in the U.S. Norma
