Oh No, Too Cold For Cuttings!

The water froze in some of the buckets of large cuttings on my front porch. The electric heater wasn't enough last night with the wind chill down to -20. I hope I don't lose them. I have a kerosene heater on the porch now & they've thawed out. I had some big (8 foot) plants there & all the ones that were blooming when frost came + all my Iochromas & Vigna caracallas. It's supposed to be a high of 19 today, 8 tonight & stay cold like this into next week. It usually doesn't do this until Jan or the beginning of Feb. I am really glad I stored most of my brugs in my friend's basement. I should have just put the big cuttings there too. I think I am going to cry today.

Don't cry Linda !!! I am so sorry. I have more cuttings than I know what to do with, so if you loose some I'll help you replace them if I have what you lost :) Keep me posted on how they do after they thaw. Which ones did you have in the buckets ? ~Edna~

You should be OK. I have three plants that are potted and stay on our deck here in Massachusetts from Spring thru Fall. I bring them in and place them in the darkest part on an unheated cellar,40 degrees, where they sort of go into semi-dormancy. Some green growth etc. Come Spring, out they come. Sorry, they are spoiled. I would toss them. I can see purposely fermenting them, but this sounds like spoilage. What is Fermented Fruit? Fermented Fruit, or Rumtopf, is fruit preserved in a sweet alcoholic syrup. There are two different ways to produce the syrup: Fermented Fruit: The syrup is produced by adding yeast to sugar. The yeast converts sugar to alcohol, producing carbon dioxide gas as a byproduct (producing alcohol by fermentation). Rumpot (or Rumtopf): The syrup is produced by adding sugar to wine, rum, brandy, or other alcohol (known as fortification). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We have been having a discussion about this very thing. Keeping foods too long past safe storage times and then trying to can them. Still waiting to hear from Elizabeth Andress, but I feel this is not safe, not even without visible signs of spoilage. Appreciate the advice and words of wisdom! trancegemini, I feel for you - sand and oily too? Yikes! I have actually Xeriscaped about 3/4 of my front yard, I live on a corner lot and haven't come up with any ideas there except for perhaps an island that I will put in when the grass get replaced. In the back, I have a garden bed butting up next to the pool cage, then grass/weeds and another large garden going the extent of the fence behind me. It is about 30 yards long. The garden is beginning to extend to the sides of the fence that surround the back, but there is not alot of room between the fence and my house. I've really cut back on the grassy areas, but grass is still going to be inevitable. Because of the draught situation and water restrictions, the homeowners association has loosened up somewhat on their tolerance for Xeriscaping but there's no way they would go for the entire yard being done this way. One homeowner fought and won the right to put some type of grass that falls into the Xeriscape category in their yard, but I just don't care for the grass. It is like a yard of clover that has yellow flowers appear sometime during the year, and it spreads like crazy annoying their grass obsessed neighbors. I realize we have really gotten off the topic of worms and apologize to anyone who may be annoyed by this; I just wanted to respond to those who were kind enough to get through initial post and offer some ideas. Now with the worms, my bin is filled with the dirt and other organic matter I captured them in as well as paper. Can I slowly start sifting out some of the dirt and substituting shredded paper/cardboard in an effort to identify and harvest their droppings? I'm thinking this will allow them to slowly acclimate to the changing environment with too much shock.

The ducts WILL cool to the attic temperature, and as ionized clearly explained the heated house air will rise into them, cool off, and ten sink back into the house. Ducts in an unconditioned attic need to be closed off during the winter. Close the vents using any control they have, and if they are still leaking remove the grill and place cardboard over the opening, than put the grill back up (paint the cardboard if you want). Unico systems (high velocity systems) are most often used for cooling, and they come with plastic plugs to close the vents during heating season. The plugs also prevent condensation in the flex ducts. If you have sheet metal ducts the condensation is more of an annoyance that anything usually. In Ductboard or flex ducts it can damage things if it freezes.

Thanks for the kind offers, most everything looks pretty good so far. It's kind of hard to check on them now because the porch light is burned out. I can't get to the ladder to replace it because it is on the end of the porch with a bunch of brugs + all the junk that didn't get put away. The water wasn't frozen solid in them but it had about a half inch of ice. My Epi (which bloomed twice this year) is out there too & doesn't look happy. I'm glad I have the Sangs under lights or they would have been out there too.

It looks like it will warm up the day after Christmas & stay that way for a couple days (yay!). It is supposed to be 4 with some wind chills tonight.

Linda I hope today is a better day for you. LIke everyone says, Cuttings can be replaced. Sometimes we just can not change the faith of what is to happen.

That sucks. Sorry you lost so much. I might be in the same boat. One of my good greenhouse heaters blew last week so I had an extra that I used but it's not that strong. Our temp was about 15 and -3 with the wind chill yesterday. Today is a balmy 18. lol One of the thermometers in my greenhouse was showing 21. Not good. I can't tell if the plants are dead yet or not. I'll have to wait until it warms up to see what the damage is. These temps are unusual for Dec, at least in my part of Maryland. We're normally in the 40's.

Oh Karyn I hope everything is okay....We put the kerosene heater in to help out the gas heater. The weather has been so brutal. Its the crappy wind that is so destructive....Barb
