"Abies lasiocarpa?? on Sulphur Mountain, Banff" - yep! (centre & right); also Picea engelmannii at left edge

"Growth on Abies/Picea??, It was June, and they just started to break bud" - Picea engelmannii, with pollen cones and foliage buds

"Larix growing in Calgary Zoo" - Looks like one of the Eurasian species, reminds me most of L. Ã marschlinsii (decidua Ã kaempferi). Got a pic of the cone?

"Picea sitchensis, Capilano" - Ooops! Pseudotsuga menziesii (am assuming it refers to the pic below the caption - the pic above does include Picea sitchensis, and also the very top of a Tsuga heterophylla sapling in the foreground)

"Old Cedar, Victoria, BC" - Cedrus deodara

That water is amazing and so are the conifer forests. I used to love kayaking down The Clackamus River on Mount Hood, OR. Same beautiful water. Drag a net of beer behind your boat for those slower floats.

I have been trying to pick the time to come here too Carol, though I know I cannot help much, but just wanted to let you know I sympathize with you as it sounds like it is something you are really not looking forward to, because of leaving your family. But just think instead of seeing them more often, when you do, it will be a nice little trip and get-away for you. That is how I consider visiting my family on the mainland. To go for a day is just not feasible as counting ferries there and back and driving time, you are looking close to six hours, so when I do go, I at least go for an overnighter or two and have a good long visit. So hope this will work out for you and you will enjoy it even more. I was so surprised to find you live in Edmonton. I do not know if you followed our court cases regarding our grandson who lives in Edmonton, hence, we have had a couple of visits there to attend court and are going again in March. We stay right down in the city close to the Bay Centre and have found, what we have seen of it, to be a very nice city. I am so impressed with those underground ped-ways. Anyhow, I always visioned Calgary to be reasonably close to Edmonton, so am surprised to hear the growing of roses would be different in those two cities. Anyway, if I can remember, I did hear a little bit about growing roses in Calgary, if you would believe, I just have to try and remember. Well I am not in our local rose society anymore, but when I was, now going back about eight years ago, somebody joined our rose society who was from Calgary and the Calgary Rose Society. She had made quite a name for herself within the Calgary Rose Society as having aquired tremendous amount of awards, heavy metal and otherwise for her rose growing and showing. She did give us a lecture one meeting about growing roses in Calgary, so now I have to get my thinking cap on, as you can immagine us living on Vancouver Island, what she went to just blew our minds. I cannot remember the details, but she wintered them with carpeting and all kinds of stuff, it looked an ugly mess, but low and behold she produced magnificent roses. She left our society and moved to Victoria. The best I can do for now is a link from the net. I hope it helps. Of course there are always those hardy Canadian roses like the Explorers etc which are supposed to be winter hardy, you may have used them in Edmonton. I just wish you luck Carol, and hope you find a nice place and make some nice new friends and be really happy there and remember, Edmonton is really not that far away. Where to get green sand in Canada (Calgary specifically)

The good news is that you don't need greensand (0-0-3). Western Canadian soils generally have enough potassium and it's not necessary to add additional amounts. If your soil is very sandy, then you may need to apply potassium. That's probably why it's not easily available even at places such as Professional Gardener. Don Heimbecker, who was the premier rose grower in Calgary, used ammonium phosphate (16-20-0) on his roses. It has the advantage of having about 14% sulfur. I would add that to my vegetable garden before spending the money on greensand. If you need to be "organic" then a Complete Organic Fertilizer such as suggested by Steve Solomon is a good choice. A simpler method would be just to apply soybean meal which can be purchased in 25 kg. bags at feed stores. Divide the protein content by 6 to get the nitrogen equivalent. If you do use an organic fertilizer, make sure that there is a good amount of organic matter in the soil or add an inch of compost at the same time. Organic fertilizers need to break down and that requires micro-organisms which are pentiful in organic matter. Your limiting nutrient will usually be nitrogen. Most sources will say that you need 4-6 lbs. of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year for healthy plant growth. So apply the soybean meal at a rate based on the nitrogen content. For high demand vegetables you can side dress. Alfalfa meal is also a good source of nitrogen and other trace elements but it takes longer for the nitrogen to become available to plants. hugs Ostrich ...I understand hail storms ... when I lived in Brisbane, Australia we had a massive one in the early 80's and it damaged/killed/smithereened so many plants ... it was heartbreaking ... I just got back from visiting my parents (again in Brisbane) they'd had another massive hail storm in November and again ...devastating ... there's nothing to do ... just pick up and go on..... the only advice I could give to my mother was to pot up babies of some of her more tender/valuable plants/succulents and grow them in a safe place permanently ... for her it was under her balcony ... Luckily many of your perennials will come back (I hope!!!) because i'm assuming they have to be very cold hardy to survive your winter. Funny enough I keep telling my husband that I want to move to Calgary (or that area - maybe Lethbridge) ... we've lived near Toronto for 25 years ... so thanks for the warning :) but it's still a beautiful area. :)

Glacier National Park is in NW Montana(more or less straight North of Missoula), right on the Canadian border and is bordered by the much smaller Waterton Lakes National Park on the Canadian side.

I forgot to mention that it's about 1/2 way between Missoula, MT and Calgary, AB and is South along the spine of the Rocky Mountains from Banff National Park in Canada.

Okay, yes, I've been in Glacier, Montana, long ago at the train station. Your pics were titled Calgary/Vancouver so I thought it might be a different Glacier Park nearer those locations.

Interesting indeed to see such typical northwest coastal area vegetation so far inland.

Sorry, I can't speak for where the photos were taken, and thought you weren't sure where Glacier National Park was located. I assume that because it's so close to where the other photos were taken that it's the same Glacier National Park, but I could be wrong!

So, ospreynm is this the Glacier National Park in Montana??

It's been a long time since I was up in those areas and one of the things that struck me the most was how European Victoria seemed both culturally and architecturally. The trees were impressive all over the area.

What are those Larix on Sulphur Mountain ?
Is this an area where L. lyallii grow ? ....how would one know the difference ? ...do they have longer needles ?

The reason I'm curious is because I ordered a few for this spring, but still not 100% sure how different they are from other Larches.

The larch on Sulphur Mountain, Banff National Park, is L. lyallii ({{gwi:656504}}); L. occidentalis ({{gwi:656505}}) doesn't get quite that far north (and can also be distinguished by its usually narrower crown).

Glacier National Park of Canada is in eastern British Columbia; not the same as Glacier National Park in Montana.

I enjoyed your photos, but was distressed by the picture of Lake Louise. The glacier at the far end of the lake is gone! I haven't been there for several years - but remember the spectacular glacier which filled the valley at the end of the lake. Just another sombre reminder of how the world is changing -so fast.

Noting that osprey's photos are from June, would it be correct to assume that the short needles are due to the early season -- i.e. fresh growth ?

In other photos, I had the impression that L. lyallii is a lot more "bushy" appearing....
If that's so, that would make for a fascinating seasonal transition - culminating in the splendid bright yellow coloring in late season.

Resin, thanks for the ID's. I don't have pics of the cone, but I'll try to take some this week. The cones were large, compared to L. decidua, about 4 cm long.

Dax, I'm sure some beer and a boat are a great combination, I just didn't have enough time

Wisconsitom and kman04, it's Glacier National Park in Canada. Yes, it is very interesting to see those two species growing there, isolated from the main distribution range.

Coralbelle, the glacier still there, just a bit higher in the pic. They are shrinking extremelly fast, I was astounded to see how quick the Athabasca glacier shrinks

Did you know that's what they were, when you took those photos ?
Were they in spring flush, as I surmised ?
Seen any brooms on any of them ?

I don't know anything about them, all I knew at the moment is that they were Larix. They grow high in the mountains, and the ones in the pics were the largest I saw. I didn't get close enough to them to see brooms. As I said, the pics were taken in June 20's. Sorry I couldn't help much..
