Help! I think my Aloe plicatilis is sick!

Hello all!

I recently bought a foot-tall Fan Aloe (Aloe plicatilis) sight-unseen (it was an *amazing* bargain!). I don't know that much about this particular species of Aloe, but it doesn't seem to be in the best of conditions to me. Three of the outermost leaves were blackened from the tip to about halfway down the leaf (two leaves one on side and one on the other side) and ALL the leaves seemed awfully soft to the touch. So far all I've done for it was water it. Since then two of the blackened leaves (one on each side) withered away and died. Can I cut off the two dead withered leaves? What should I do with the other blackened leaf? Are the leaves naturally so soft or does that indicate a problem? (BTW: It has a nice trunk which is firm.) I would appreciate any care tips or advice concerning my Fan Aloe. Thanks for reading my long-winded message!
