Peep Peep!

We have chicks hatching! Fat little balls of fluff :) We have 50 eggs in the incubator which is sitting on a stool over in my sewing corner in the living room. I've been hearing one of the chicks peeping for two days now but it didn't break out of it's shell until later this evening. It's a little, spotted, mostly black chick! We have all sorts of crazy colored chickens this year and the Ugliest black and white Rooster you've ever laid eyes on. He has NO TAIL FEATHERS! The rest should start hatching tomorrow, their due date. I need to go get some chick starter mash! By tomorrow night I'll be so crazy from listening to peeping chicks I'll want to pull my hair out, LOL!

My neighbours have chickens - I can hear the roosters either side of me. Cool - yes pics please.

Are they in an incubator or under a hen? If they have a mama hen, just put her and the chicks in their own pen and she'll take care of keeping them warm and teaching them how to eat and drink. Provide a secure pen with appropriate food & water, and litter that can provide traction--nothing slick. If they are in an incubator, have a brooder box all warm and ready to go: you need a source of heat (like a light bulb), the box needs to be free of drafts and secure from predators, baby chick food--either chick starter or grow mash--both are a finely ground food, and water that the chicks cannot drown in. Chicks absorb the last of the egg yolk just before hatch, and can survive for up to three days off of it--so don't freak out if you don't see them eating right away. Same here, we got ours going this Saturday. The sound is THE BEST! We saw one of our frogs, and all of our fishies - well, I dunno, we saw a lot of fishies. We have no idea how many we have. But Demetrius, our (only) (1 1/2 foot long) koi is looking good. The spring peepers are singing here since Thursday. Apparently, that was the day all the local amphibian wildlife moved to the vernal pools - the snow having barely melted... Btw, spring peepers, Glenda, are itty bitty froggies. They peep. Peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep. All night. Nice call Cathy, definatly a Phoebe. My neighbor happend to be there, she is at the church nearly daily she will pass on the do's and dont's to Pastor Kevin. Of course you know a neighbor of mine.....LOL has heard all about the birds wether she wanted to or not. She called a week ago asking if I had an extra orange we both knew she was NOT making a salad! ;)

I don't suppose those chicks are sexed. Will you keep the roosters? We bought day old chicks once but half turned out to roosters that my husband had to 'get rid of'.

I will take some pictures when they are all done hatching. They have been hatching for two days. We'll give it a couple more days and see how many more we get. So far the neighbors white eggs are ahead of our brown and green eggs. His are all yellow chicks and ours are all weird mixed colors with some crazy markings!

I saw the ugly rooster limping across the yard today. I bet he has a sand bur stuck in one of his toes. I'd remove it for him but I don't think he'd let me get near him with a pair of tweezers. He might be hard to get a pic of. He generally hangs out under the boats or the tractors where it's damp and the bugs are plentiful. But I'll try, I just have to remember to take my camera out with me when I go to the garden.

I keep checking this thread, hoping for pix. Hope they're not driving you crazy, Memo.

When I was a mere slip of a lass, we ordered 50 eggs, 53 hatched. Half of them boys (evidently there's a process called candling, but I'm not going to guess what they look for in this family-friendly forum ;-)
