Leafs dying on Operculicarya decaryi

I have this Operculicarya decaryi that has been outside since late May. It was watered regularly during the summer, especially the last month when it was insanely hot. I brought it back indoors about 2 weeks ago. Watered only a bit since then. It is in a plastic pot.

Now, I know normally these plants defoliate when it gets really dry. I let mine do that last winter since tropicals don't grow much during winter anyway with poor light conditions and cool temps. But this time, some of the leaves are just turning brown. They are still connected to the little tree; don't fall off when you touch them like they do when the tree is shedding because of drought.

Could this be lack of fertilizer? or (really hoping not) root rot?

Anyone have any ideas about what might be causing this?
