Abies concolor in a forestry plantation?

Any idea why the top of the first tree is dead (or nearly dead)?

Hi Resin you are completly right. This abies concolor is my favorite tree for exhibition...,
I mean TV stuff from Czech TV Prague, for example,photograps, newspapersmen etc. call me..: is good weather, they are saying, and good light and we are near your place in Ostrava. Can we do something about dwarf conifers gardening with you ??? My talking head say yes, of course..... BTW - during last 20 years nobody follow me to the top of this fir..... Maybe you understand me...
As to top, concolor witchÂ´s broom is going to be leader....
As to unusual old tree in Czech forests... You know there are too many such small arboreta with unusual old tree near the old rangers houses or gamekeepers lodges. Some hundreds years old Abies nordmanianas, concolors, Pinus strobus, Chamecyparisis etc...Maybe you remeber this link:

I am taking note of all the soil suggestions! We don't have clay problems, although most of the subdivisions around here do. I think I tend to err on the side of "too large a pot" when I plant things and I repot as soon as something starts to look too big in the pot. I did buy a large picea abies 'formanek' on clearance at the end of the season, it was so root-bound that I had to cut the pot. GORGEOUS conifer, though, and I'm hoping it will be fine. It was over a full month after I planted it until we had our first hard frost and it looked great then. I can get about as much wood chips/mulch as I want. I have a pickup truck and our local landfill has free mulch for county residents, they even load it for you and have very convenient weekend hours. Sometimes when they are low they limit you to one load per day. Would there still be benefit from burying in mulch if I have the conifer in a large hypertufa container? When I say "large", I mean I'm thinking of making two that will be about 3' high x 3' wide x 3' deep. I want to start working on one this weekend in my basement, but I have to take down the Christmas tree and put away decorations...just don't think I will have the time. I did send out a letter to Bob & Brigitta today to modify the order - cancelled the cryto and added a pinus parviflora 'goy kurl' ('goykuri'), and named a few alternates in case anything is out of stock or unavailable. Another question... did they keep growing in the starter tray the whole time or just stops at certain height? My montezuma cypress seedlings show huge differences between the ones still in the starter tray and in 3-5g gallons. The ones I moved into bigger pots the earliest are in the low 30s inches now while the ones still in the tray are less than a foot! Man, it requires so much materials for 3-5g containers... esp 15g Roottraper bag which requires sifting a whole 3 cubic feet of landscaper mix... Agh...

That is a lovely rose, Jane. I simply drool with envy over that and also Claire's lovely climbing roses, but I fear I am a zone too far north for roses to really do well. My neighbor has a few, but she grows them next to her house foundation (now that is a thought of a way I could grow some!) and she covers them during the winter months. I believe that most winters here (because of our altitude) reach conditions closer to zone 3, although we are supposed to be zone 4. I do have some micro-mini roses, because my Dad sends me one every year on Valentines day, and they typically last outdoors only about 2 years on average. Covering them during winter doesn't seem to increase their cold resistence or longevity. I laugh about my orange garden! All my other flower beds contain multi-colored specimens, and that garden was supposed to as well, but only orange flowers have survived there. Marigolds over-ran and choked out the red geraniums intended to share their pots, and pink and purple flowers met a similar fate. Anything orange thrived, so rather than read my orange flowers the bill of floral civil rights, I just gave up and let my bigoted orange flowers have their little gated community. I give them disapproving looks from time to time, but no longer try to integrate hapless blue, red, or purple blooms. I know what will happen. I really, really want to try growing a tithonia/Mexican sunflower, Pixielou, but I fear I am a zone too cold for them to ever flower. The plants in my orange garden would definitely embrace tithonia, but I don't think it would really fit there. I'd like a row of them along the back foundation of my house, but with sun only half the day, they'd be at an even further climactic disadvantage. Still I keep eye-ing them. Maybe I should start them early in pots. And lo and behold, as soon as I saw the photos of Indian pipe I was struck with nostalgic longing, not having seen those since I was a kid. Then what do I spy on a walk around our wooded path, but two Indian pipe fungi growing under a pine tree! I didn't have time to get the camera, but there they were! I wonder if this is a particularly favorable year for Indian pipe here in New England.

Hi Dax, Hollywood action is only stumbling because of my climbing sling.., as to movie, I was born in Hrabova and still live in Hrabova. You see, first character is same like a Hollywood, big H, but making films in Hrabova is not so easy like in Hollywood and of course I have not a curly hair....

Hi, if you are interested in - my one of oldest dwarf conifer. Near the bloulder. Maybe 40 years old. Trunk about 20 cm diameter Winter repair works...., you know...
