Jim sphagnum moss works well for rooting. I've wrapped a cutting in moistened long fiber sphagnum then covered it with a baggie, making sure to get out as much air as possible. The roots grew right into the moss. I haven't tried that in a while but you might have hit on a really good idea for those hard to root varieties. I've never tried an orchid roll but buy LF sphagnum by the bag. It's a great gardening supply to keep on hand. I use it for a few things like layering and starting certain seeds, especially those that need cold stratification. Thanks for bringing it up.

The process was roll out plastic, moss top and bottom good and roll they leave the bottom open. Seems the Orchid moss has some special qualities. There was a test using different types of rooting material. The orchid moss won out. I cannot find long fiber sphagnum here. Maybe I have not looked good enough. Any way some of the growers on other forums like D , ZZ are using it exclusively for rooting and long term holding of cuttings. From my point of view properly done it could hold a bunch of cuttings and make portability and insultation already done.

If I'm not mistaken the orchid moss is made of long fiber sphagnum. You should be able to find it at a HD or Lowes. It comes in bags, usually near the orchid supplies.

There used to be an old brugmansia information website that illustrated how to do that with moss to root bulk cuttings. I looked for the website and couldn't find it. They put them up on pebbles or something so the roots/bottoms of the cuttings didn't sit in water. Not sure if orchid moss or green moss was used but it was one of the two. I'v been rooting my HI TI plants in moss and it has worked out great, much better than soil ever did. Now I can order rare Ti logs and not worry about having any rot.

SJN: Am very interested in how you rooted using moss (green or orchid). I've been experimenting with rooting cuttings via the "log" method. Altho more successful for me than BOB, Sometimes my cuttings get too dry or too wet. Haven't been able to find the proper zone for the right cutting! This moss wrapping method may be even easier and more dependable than the "log" way. Would appreciate your giving some detailed instructions ... know this is a busy time, and I apologize for the inconvenience, but I've got some cuttings right now that can use all the expertise help I can get for them!! SJN wasn't that at Dave's in the early 2001, I seem to remember a post about that and see County Gardens sends his rooted plants in what appears to be sphagnum.

Karma, I can't remember where I saw it, it seems like it might of been on a brugmansia 101 website. There is a new website for that now and I didn't see it on the new one. I wasn't a DG member that far back (2001)so it prob. wasn't there lol. I might have saved the pictures/illustration somewhere-have to check my old computers...I don't think I could legally post them but it might say the website on them.

I am doing Hawiian Ti logs not brugs. I tried to do brug logs this way but I think it was too humid. It does work good on the really green ones but not on semi-wood or hard wood the way I am doing it.
I am taking a small tray and placing the moss in the tray, pre-soak the moss, then drain well. Lie the Ti logs or very green brug cuttings on the moss and put it all in a ziplock bag on heat, under lights. They sprout right up. After getting enough roots you can divide the logs and plant in well draining soil.

For the woody and semi wood brugmansia, less humidity is better so you would root as Jim stated above. I think once the roll was done they stood it up and had the bottoms of the cuttings sitting on pebbles with water in them. They had placed them all in a black nursery pot with holes in the bottom and set that on the pebble filled tray so water would only come up so far.

Very hard wood (brown bark) brug cuttings can go straight into soil. Make sure there is some perlite mixed into your soil and that it is draining immediately after watering. Let it dry out about an inch on top of the dirt before watering again. I put all mine under grow lights. Make sure your lights are at least a good 3 inches above the tips to help prevent drying from the top down.

Karyn- went to the feed store and ordered some long fiber sphagnum and vermiculite. Both items come in 4 cu ft and run 22.50 ea. Maybe it will stop plant shock when they put their feet into my soil. I used to put plants in the ground and they would take off. Now they sulk for a while try to die and then take off.

SJN- I had to google what a ti Log was. I believe I have on of those plants. Checked it out I have 8. Where is a good place to get a selection. I am collecting plants and I really like their foilage. Which one is the hardiest and might like my climate. lousy pic but it is all I have at this time.
