Japanese Maple Supplier

I'm not typically one for promoting someone but I just got an order from a supplier I was very happy with I thought I'd share.

The company was Maple Ridge Nursery out of Georgia. They specialize in plants that can take our southern US heat. And they have a huge variety of japanese maples. I was looking for 4 decent size specimens and they had all 4. Their prices weren't cheap, but reasonable I felt for the size. I got all 4 in 3 gallon size pots - 18-24" tall nicely branched plants. They were $65 each and shipping was $19.50 for the first and $14.50 for everyone thereafter.

They had no problem holding them until I was ready for them to ship in between all the ice storms. They arrived well packaged and very protected.

So as I say they weren't cheap, but they have a great variety of good looking, full trunked and fully branched plants.

I also wanted to pass along something else. With this garden remodel we're doing I wanted to do something special for my wife, so I have now named our gardens ( as many of you that have larger gardens do ). I thought it would be nice to post a couple of nice signs with the garden's name around the garden so I went out and found a company that does really nice laser engraved signs in wood.

They have a really hands-on website that will actually help you design your sign, or what I did was simply send them a file drawing of the logo I had already come up with. They scanned that into their system and made a couple of really nice 9" X 16" signs out of clear cedar. I had them reverse engrave the wood so the logo was in fact raised and all the background was cut out. They then stained the background dark and gave it a couple of polyurethane coats for good outdoor protection. The work was spectacular and the price was cheap I felt for custom wood signs, especially since the reverse engraving means they are cutting out 90% of the wood. She only charged me $45 a piece for the finished signs. I think their regular signs without the reverse cutting process were only like $30. I'll post a picture of one of ours later.

Thanks Mark. There's a lot of maple enthusiast's on here. I paid similar prices for apprx. 1-gal root-systems from Mendicino Maples - but I was pleased. I knew what I wanted and they had them.

On the sign, my wifes name is Barbie...hence the name.

The first shot is the logo I came up with and the second is the finished sign.......

I don't think you have to move right to questioning his competence. I would check first what assumptions each of you is operating under. If you have given him instructions to produce a certain kind of environment in the yard, shade may be an essential part of that and perhaps he can't produce any other source of shade in the short term and is concerned you'll not be happy with the outcome if there isn't enough shade. Or something. He may also be making some assumptions about how much you want to water your plants. I de-shaded the north side of my house with the removal of a tree and it does get sunny as the sun veers around in the afternoon. New trees are just growing in enough to make an impact 4 years later. If there is a chance you will be removing the big tree at some point within 5 years, the pot is a very good idea for another reason - you'll have to get the little maple out of the way of falling tree parts. They do grow well in pots, especially if the pots are big enough. KarinL

While a thread about PDN is still up, I'd say I have to agree they are somewhat declining. But I think that almost all of the mail order rare plant nurseries*, save one, are slipping in customer service quality. That one is Seneca Hill Perennials. As for the rest, I'm not going to name names but I'll just say I've ordered from most of the biggies. I do not mail order from Rarefind because I can drive there, but I've seen their packing operation in full force and the quality of the packing looks superior. Back to PDN, specifically, I had a plant that arrived VERY small in my opinion, and I broke its stem getting the rubber band off and it did not recover. My fault - granted. I simply asked could they ship a replacement, that _I_ would pay for plus the actual cost of the mailing/shipping. But bypassing the minimum order I'd have to for a 2nd order. My email was ignored. That is simply unacceptable for someone who placed a $200 order with them. I'm not that angry about it though. I think it's a difficult business. As we know quite a few mail order nurseries have disappeared in the past 5 years, more in the past 10 years. Especially ones that carried relatively unglamorous plants, like Dilworth Nursery in PA. It's a frightening trend in some ways. And granted, by "slipping" I'm counting relatively minor annoyances like what I see as an increasing trend toward "bait & switch" by putting a certain plant in the spring catalog, letting you order it and then emailing, "oops, those need 6 more months on the bench." Funny how that never happened in my mail ordering experiences in the 1990s. I think in the 1990s they were less pressured to rush things out! The miniscule plant from PDN I got whose stem was broken with the slightest provocation needed 6 months to a year more on the bench. * btw I am not counting Bluestone as a rare plant mail order nursery, just a mail order nursery. They are good, the plants are tiny but they don't hide that fact. And they are well grown so they establish quickly.

I think you mean Bloodgood, and I'm a bit late to this conversation, but they will look like the picture I am sharing: Or this... Or this... These are all from Acer Palmatum 'Bloodgood' and germinate successfully from samaras (seeds) that get cold stratified naturally (or in a fridge for 90ish days) and then grow into seedlings (shown in all of my pics). You can graft other cultivars (scions) onto these, which would make these seedlings your eventual rootstock (after seedling grows for about 2 years or 1/8 in). Or these seedlings could be used for bonsai, or just planted as is and they would just be considered Acer Palmatum Red Japanese Maple, not a Bloodgood unless it's grafted. Often young oaks have leaves that vary considerable from older plants of the same species. It is red oak group due to pointed leaf tips, but closer than that I doubt it can be IDed due to its youth unless there is a mature oak nearby which might give you a reasonable guess at species.

Conifers and Japanese maples compliment eachother so well that occasionally I feel like these forums should be named 'Conifers and Japanese maples'. I'll try and mix in a few pictures of my many JM's in the next few weeks as they begin to wake.
