Comments (3)Cindy: It's hard to say and could vary a lot. But I would expect roots well beyond the drip line. On a big tree I'd expect a root diameter approaching 100 ft....See MoreNew garden Walnut roots
Comments (11)It depends whether it is an english walnut or a black walnut. It is only the latter that produces massive amounts of juglone. The former produces as much juglone as hickories, which is not much. Please google it to identify it, the leaves are totally different. Black has small, serrated leaves, english has larger leaves smooth at the edges, similar to those of certain hickory trees. I have one bed about 20 ft from a large black walnut. It continues away from the tree up to 45 ft from the tree. Beets, chard, beans, garlic, and various herbs all grow there, but I would not plant tomatoes, lettuce, potato, or broccoli. Juglone in the soil is eliminated by high biological activity, so load up on compost and lay it thickly. If I ever get to cutting my black walnut, I would certainly inject the stump and surface roots with edible mushrooms. Now that is bioremediation! You get a crop while you clean the soil doing no work. See fungi.com for plug spawn. After injection, keep the stump (which I assume will be in the sun) covered with leaves or other material that will keep it cool and moist....See Morehelp! hybrid black walnut/english walnut tree seedling black tips

Comments (13)Studies also showed an interesting correlation between good drainage and lesser concentrations of juglone in the soil. There are even microorganisms that nullify or breakdown juglone and soil components that interfere with the toxicity. Every situation is different, so there's no concrete answer to be had. There will always be someone with the 'special' tree, shrub, location, etc, where something does well and it shouldn't; usually there's an attribute that will explain it. The walnut that has such a great stand of vegetation beneath it that I've observed has a heck of a terrific situation for drainage. Heavy organic matter added to the soil probably helps there as well....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
