I don't know anything about it except that it is nice looking.Personally i'd put it in a rectangular pot,with the stem touching the soil.May be able to get more pups(babies) from it.

I would have snagged it too,had i seen it.

Thanks for the input =) The more I think of it, the more I feel like he will need to come in for the winter. I'm treating him like my Jades for now until I can figure out more about his habit.

I haven't been able to find much about him during my research but I'm most interested in his growth habit. I bare rooted him & put him in a regular ol' pot to grow some more while I figure out what to do with him.

He's got a lovely stem/trunk that moves beautifully. If his branches would grow well in pads with pinching he would make quite a pretty houseplant. I have his bare back facing the sun in hopes of getting growth to balance out.

I'm not sure if these guys pup but I'm about to find out if the cuttings root =) I broke a small limb off while turning him around to get a better look. It's in some gritty mix and with any luck it'll strike. He kinda reminds me of Charlie Brown's sad little Christmas tree. Boy, wouldn't he be something if I could grow his trunk fat?! It's got an odd texture, kind of waxy. Shrug. I'll post an update in a month or 2.

A tough plant that grows gigantic. Blooms in January for me. Not frost hardy at all, and it is S. barbertonicus. The best thing to do is cut a branch off every couple of years and root it (easily done). It will live in a thimble of dirt. The blooms are really quite nice.

Thanks for the info Dz! I brought him in & treat him like a Jade. I'm glad to know it was the right thing to do -_-

I hope putting him in a gritty mix will work for him, cause that's what his feet are in now. So far, he looks exactly the same as in the last pic. No signs of stress. I like his wavy trunk & though it's currently the thickness sharpee, maybe it'll make a good tree-like container plant for me.

I'd love to see pics of yours. Is yours kept indoors or are you in a warmer climate than I? The most I've been able to find is google-wise is in different languages, sometimes, info just doesn't translate well.

He *is* quite unusual, isn't he :) What I can't figure out is what the hell was he doing here at an average garden center on Long Island? It's not a high end nursery & they usually carry the usual plants, nothing untried, shall we say.

The original price was 17.99 or so for 1 qt container & it *did* say annual. Maybe it was leftover landscaping material, because there's a wholesale landscape supply business at the same location. He looks like a Dr. Seuss tree to me =) and his funky habit led me to sedum multiceps.

Sheesh. My collection is growing in leaps & bounds, I'm going to have to start a trade list aren't I?

I came across this a little while ago...Could what I have be a Tylecodon dinteri? I only ask because I can't really see the branches of the pics I've found of S. babertonicus but this T. dinteri looks an awful lot like mine. Mine has a waxy trunk the same color as this one.

hookilau, I cut the plant and took 2 cuttings just before I left home last month. Sorry. The room they were in was such a mess I had to trash a lot of the big plants in there and kept cuttings so that I would have room to bring in the tender ones before I left since I though it might freeze before I got back in mid-Oct. I can show you what the room looked like last March. The barbertonicus can be seen through the wire plant stand on the right (bottom of plant stand are a few leaves showing just to the left of the brown fern leaf), and also on the top of the red poinsettia. If you enlarge the pic a bit they show. I know, what a mess, don't flame me. Addicts are people too. Just paste the address in the browser.
