on my first day of class at Chemeketa Community College, I decided to browse the pine trees before my plant propagation course.

==>> someday.. someone will write a conifer dictionary..

and there will be a pic of the monkey ... listed under TREE GEEK ..

Nice find, Sam!

It looks like the mutation is quite recent, since there are only a few years' growth at most. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

Do you have any pictures showing more of the parent tree? I'd like to see how it sits in the tree, and what the surrounding branches/foliage look like.

Ken, I do consider myself a "tree geek." Luckily, along with that title comes a vast knowledge of conifers. ;-)

Pretty cool Sam. I picture you running around campus and driving around Northern Oregon, bumping into things and hearing the hum of lane dividers on roads as your glance is stolen by tree after tree searching for broom. What a great start to your life, a job in a hobby you love and school where you can get a solid foundation to work with and discover brooms between classes. Life is good!

Why is the understock so naked? Is that cleaning helps to grow the scionwod? or why? Thanks for the answer.

If there are less needles on the understock, it performs two functions:
1. more light reaches the scion.
2. more energy produced in the scion due to the lack of needles.

Graft 'em low so the junction doesn't show!
