The hardcopy of the catalogue contains an order form.
As I recall, the cost of the catalogue is reimbursed when you place your order.

Trust me, ordering from "IN 5b" is a lot simpler than ordering from Montreal, Canada :O)

....but its worth the trouble, either way.

The items you get from Coenosium should be of high quality. Good plants with healthy roots. Probably the least rootbound/girdled of any mailorder source I've dealt with. My 2 cents.

If I were you I wouldn't order from the 2007 catalog. They sell out of many plants shortly after each years catalog comes out. The 2008 catalog should be out soon. Then get you order in as soon as possible.

Thanks everyone. I am compiling my list from the current on-line catalog and am guessing orders should be placed really soon to avoid being disappointed. Many items are already marked "sold out".

The real challenge is not blowing the whole season's plant budget (not that there really is such a thing) in one order!

Please keep in mind that the online catalog is from 2007 and that's why many items are marked as sold out. Wait until the new catalog is mailed or until the website is updated to compile/place an order. There will be new items in the 2008 catalog that were not in the 2007 catalog.

I know it's hard not to order everything in the catalog. (:o)

Have no familiarity with Bob and Diane's products and am not commenting on those.

I have purchased conifers from Bob & Dianne for 2 years and have a order for 2008 in the works.

His conifers are healthy and I have never encountered a problem with root bound plants. I especially like that he offers rare and unique conifers. Most are of the miniature and slower growing cultivars. Right up my alley as I don't have the room for species conifers.

Treelover3, Great selection of cultivars you have ordered. For what it's worth I have two "Chief Joseph'. One planted in the winter sun and the other in shade from mid November to late March. Everything else being equal the one in the winter shade is a better performer then the one exposed to the winter sun. Anyone want to chime in on why this is?

There is not a overwhelming distinction between the two as to better performance but on close observance you can see it. As I tend to my conifers every year I guess you could say I am more attentive with regard to their growth habits and what they like and dislike. The "Chief" in the shade has better color. New candle growth is more dense and ever so slightly longer. The 'Chief in the winter sun will burn ever so slightly.
One came from Stanley & Sons the other from Coeosiumn. Does the sun issue pay apart in their different growth habits? You tell me I don't know. A lot of other things could come into play am I am aware of this. I do know that several of the gold cultivars do burn in winter sun. Does this has some effect on growth patterns? Again I don't know.

I am glad we have a working relationship on the forum again.

You asked what we have purchased from Coenosium. Well, I went through my card file and found 8 trees were purchased over a period of 4 or 5 yrs and I have 5 doing well now in my garden.
They are.....Picea abies 'Pusch', Picea pungens 'Donna's Rainbow', Pinus parviflora 'Fuku-Zu-Mi', Pinus thunbergiana 'Koto Buki' and a Taxodium Distichum 'Peve Minaret' One is still in a container as I was planning to grow it as a bonsai....'Fuku-Zu-Mi'.....as it has been in training as a windswept style tree.

The 2008 catalog is out! KD good luck not going too crazy with your order :-) They have alot of cool new things this year. Bindersbee, I've ordered at least 6-10 plants per year from Coenosium for the last 4 years and have never been disapponted. I placed my 2008 order this morning via e-mail. My first go through of the catalog was about 20 conifers. I narrowed it down to eight, but I may add a couple more. Good luck not going crazy with your order, but I highly recommend them. Dan

Be careful on the web site catalog. I am having issues with the web site provider and had to do a backwards upload of the site. I have to clean up a few things. Any plants that have an unloaded picture (at the bottom of the page) that says realty is sold out. They will be disappearing from the site but for now still show up. Hopefully they will soon be gone to save any confusion.

The paper catalog goes into the mail early next week.

What did you order from Coenosium?

So far, I have ordered:

Picea glauca 'Burning Well'
Picea glauca 'Goldilocks'
Picea orientalis 'Tom Thumb Gold'
Thuja occidentalis 'Mini Twists'

I am debating on adding:

Abies lasiocarpa 'Prickly Pete'
Picea abies 'Tufty'

If anyone knows how large 'Tufty' gets in 10 years, I would appreciate knowing. In the plant's description, Bob says the plant is slow growing, but he doesn't give any inches-per-year info. The plant sort of reminds me of a small snake spruce with its open branching.

I'm going to try and get my taxes done in the next couple of weeks and see if it's good news or bad news - that will determine what I add, if anything, to my order.

Picea abies 'Tufty' grows 1-2" (less than 5cm) per year. The one pictured on the site is about 15 years old and growing in 60% shade. In full sun it would grow a bit slower and be much fuller.

I would guess the JW, which incidentally is the originators initials. is technically invalid, as cultivar names should only contain two words according to the cultivar code for the nameing of plants, and if this particular plant has
been registered, the cultivar code would apply. I believe this is the case but stand to be corrected. I do know however that the JW has been droped from the cultivar name.

I have a small Golden Spreader that is sunk in a pot on the east side of my house. The plant has done fine, so far, and that has surprised me. Most sources list Abies nordmanniana 'Golden Spreader' as a zone 6 plant. I am going to put the plant into the garden this spring and see what happens.

Well, there is a big difference between you and me; you plan and then buy the plants that fit your plan (and this is how it should be done.) Me, I buy the plants and then decide if and where I might have the room to plant them. (:o) But, the funny thing is, doing it this way (backwards) always seems to work out for me. (:o)

Very nice plant list, BTW. I should never look at plants that someone else is ordering because I want to add them to my list, too. Dwarf Alberta Spruce just burn up here, so that one isn't very tempting to me, but the others sure are.

Once you get your new beds done, please post some pics for us.

Hi Kim,

I have had 'Frisian Gold' since 2001. It has grown well and I have not had any needle burn at all so I would think that is should be solid through zone 6. I grew it in a pot for a couple of years before planting it out as a 3 gallon plant. The only thing that might make a difference is if you have a lot of wind which I don't. David

Just received my ACS Quarterly today, I noticed on the conifer registration section there are plenty of examples of cultivars with three part names, so not a problem there then. So I now have no idea why the JW was droped from Daisy's White.

Probably for the same reason some people arbitrarily changed the name Picea orientalis 'Tom Thumb Gold' to 'Tom Thumb'. Just laziness. To stay with the name the discoverer wanted on the plant is the proper thing to do whenever the plant has been named correctly.

All it takes is for one person working where the plant is produced to shorten the name on labels or in a price or catalog listing and the new version to be continued by multiple customers for the mistake to become prevalent. With cultivars picked up and reproduced by a big company there could sometimes even be thousands of them sold at retail outlets under the wrong name during a comparatively short period of time. Now that tissue culture is being used (don't remember seeing indications of conifers being done this way) some previously obscure selections can become widespread, when a big operation adds it to their offering.

Thanks Mike and David. I've placed my order and included both the Golden Spreader and Frisian Gold. I plan to put the Golden Spreader in partial shade, where it will be a bit cooler. We are fairly protected from wind so hopefully won't have a problem with the Frisian Gold.

Wondering why the Frisian Gold, as a Pinus contorta, is shown as a Zone 7 plant, when other contortas are hardy to Z3 ??

I have a couple of the conifers on your list.
1. Abies nordmanniana 'Golden Spreader"
This plant is in morning sun and partial shade in afternoon. It has grown slowly for me and I suspect that our high humidity/summer heat does hurt it a bit. Wish it grew better though, the winter color is a bright banana yellow(somewhere under a foot of snow at the moment though).
2. Cephalotaxus harringtonia 'Korean Gold'
Definitely a unique conifer and one of my favorites. It is faster growing than the fir, but not going to get huge any time soon. The one negative to this conifer for me is that it seems to be a deer and/or bunny magnet. I do not have another conifer that gets attacked as much as this one. This is the third winter that I have lost the upper part of my plant to their dam#@d grazing, and this year I placed a wire cage around it(unfortunately not over it- next year I will though- and am thinking of trying concertina wire and land mines).

The 'Frisian Gold' is impressive. Mature specimens, fully developed without shearing or crowding are great. The 'Golden Spreader' apparently got some apical dominance hormones going and will eventually be a fairly big tree if it lives long enough. Wonder if it will become noticeably less yellow in time. Many tree-sized yellow conifer cultivars here do that, Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Plumosa Aurea' and multiple gold C. lawsoniana forms for instance.

Shannon -- Good to hear your 'Golden Spreader' is doing good. I suspect our heat and humidity levels are somewhat similar. I expected it to be slow, considering the price I saw on about a 3 gal. specimen last summer - $350!

Bluespruce, your 'Golden Spreader' is gorgeous (as is your entire garden -- drool!) How old is your specimen? Of course, your growing conditions are much more suitable than are ours in the midwestern US. Everything in your garden is pristine.

Thanks for the heads-up Shannon on the 'Korean Gold'. I'll keep a close eye on it for browsing, although our Golden Retriever does a pretty good job of keeping the deer and rabbits out of our yard.

I love that 'Frisian Gold'. That's the same specimen shown in the Coenosium catalog.

I'm buying:

Picea omorika 'Peve Tijn' & Pinus mugo 'Sleizsky Dom'.

The mugo was a tough call for me as I was sloshing back and forth with another mugo, 'Bozidar' but ultimately what sold me is the white bands (resin) on the inside portions of the leaves and that the Sleizsky Dom is a one-gallon plus a quicker grower. I like em both.

Time to email in my order. That 'Peve Tijn' I've wanted a long time. I'm gonna bite this time.

Hi Kim,

Unfortunately my 'Frisian Gold' is not as bight as Wiel's and I had Golden Speader but it didn't like our climate. If your summers are hot and humid like ours make sure it gets good afternoon shade and the soil is very good. The other option which I am trying this year is planting some firs grafted on abies firm. It can handle the heat better.

As to the question from kim_dirtdigger in regard to Pinus contorta 'Frisian Gold' being only hardy to zone 7. If I recall correctly, the broom was found on a Pinus contorta var. contorta (Shore pine) along the Pacific coast as opposed to, say, a Pinus contorta var. latifolia 'Chief Joseph' which hails from much cooler climes. I, too, have wanted to try one but felt (even with the zone pushing that I do) that was a bit much.
