I would bring them in, at least for the night, as the official forecast and what is actually there for you can differ by several degrees. As I recall, coleus can take lower temps than impatiens - the latter shrivel up when it goes much below 38, in my experience. If you will not be having low temps for another few nights, the plants can go back out, and acclimate to pots - keep them well watered but not soggy. I would move them into a bit more shade, since the light levels inside will be lower. If your garage doesn't freeze, they can spend the winter there, sheltered from errant early morning or late night drafts as you take cars in and out. They can also be treated as house plants, if you have room - you can cut them back a bit to fit them into the available space, maybe starting new plants from the trimmings, so there are replacements if these decide to die anyway.

It is my understanding that the overwintered plants aren't the best for next summer's plants - you do better to take cuttings in the late winter, and use them for your bedding plants, once they have grown up and the weather has warmed up, and discarding the originals. However, that may well be wrong - I do know of several of each that friends have had as potted plants over a few years, so they CAN go on for a few years. Despite that we treat them as annuals, they are both of them tender perennials - they just can't take cold....

3 windows in the dining room, all north-facing. Good thing these plants are shade-loving.

I did this too, and brought them in immediately. Mine are happily growing in the kitchen for the Winter. This is the first time I have tried it, but we simply have nothing to lose, right? I have often seen people growing Coleus as house plants for years. It will be interesting to see how the Impatiens will do. Please try to keep us posted.

Years ago my mother gave me two huge pots of impatiens in the fall that she could not bear to throw away. They looked gorgeous for a couple of weeks and then set seed that popped out all over the place. After that they got spindly and I threw them away. I think if I had cut them back when I brought them in they might have lasted longer. Adele

i've had some impatiens my daughter brought home as a mom's day gift going for several years now as the base plant in a large fishtail palm that goes out for the summer. when it comes in, i leave it be til it gets too leggy, then give it a haircut, and it flushes back out. i've done this with lots of other pots, too. you can even stick the trimmings in the pot and often they will root as well to make it fuller. they do well in the house and out in the cool greenhouse, both. this method works well with ornamental sweet potatoes, wandering jews, ralph's portulaca, and that red oxalis that makes wonderful ground or pot covers, too. some things virtually die back, while others flush and love the heat or cool (most like one or the other better).

i've not had as much luck with coleus. this year i'm trying putting them in water in vases on a windowsill, and as they get too leggy, restarting them rooting again til spring. someone mentioned this in a thread last year. for me, they get too buggy in pots inside, and can't stand the cold in the cool greenhouse or basement where i overwinter a lot of things. we'll see how this method compares. i'm doing the same with some sweet potatoes and peach and pineapple sage.
