my cacti/succulent bed after its first season

hi, i just wanted to show some pictures of my cacti and succulent bed, i made it this spring and even tough our summer has been a little short and cold this year it has done well :)

O. humifusa, all the light green pads are new growth, im hoping to see some flowers next year :)

im not sure what to do about the area around the bed, but im prob just gonna plant some grass for now

when i planted this sedum it was smaller than my hand :)

Jonas...Isn't it exciting to see such progress knowing that you are doing job, in fact GREAT..

You have yourself some nice looking plants there..

It is good to see you again...Now we have to get you to try growing citrus trees and a couple of Jades, the hummell in particular...:-)
You must have all year great weather over there...Very nice..
What is the coldest it ever gets there anyway?

Don't expect them to play nice in the same bowl for long. You've got two clumpers and two columnars, and if they like where they are they'll be competing for room pretty quickly. The bowl itself can be used if you hide a separate pot for each cactus inside it, and it'll make separating them easier as well. What sort of potting mix do you have? Most of the stuff off the shelf is not good for cacti, though the ones you have are pretty tolerant as long as they're not overwatered. Nice little starter pack you've got there though. Here's hoping you keep the four of them going throughout the rest of your collecting career.

kay - LOL it planted itself?? Musta been there for a little while... our's will be planted before the end of the week, I hope. That's if we can afford the soil and other supplies for the beds after I just spent almost $400 on those plants and the lilies I just ordered from Brent & Becky's! ;-) Also, I'm VERY happy that DH is so interested in these gardens... his mother used to be quite the gardener and she loved her plants so I think that's where he gets it from. He may try to hide it from me but I can tell he gets almost as excited as I do about plants! holleygarden - That's too bad that the JM that you tried to plant didn't survive... I'm sure it didn't have anything to do with your abilities as a gardener though... so don't feel bad. From what I've seen of the roses we bought online I'm pretty sure I'll love them too... we'll be buying more this week to fill out that bed so I hope I can at least get that BS under control before we plant. I will be getting rid of the foliage/canes that are infected as much as possible and then spraying regularly all season should help.... I hope! aimee - TY so much.. I've always wanted one. I'll be sure to post photos after everything is planted. Hopefully my lilies will show up this coming weekend so I can plant them too... got A LOT of work to do before we can plant anything though... gotta have some beds to plant in! ttfn Cheryl.

Did you mention where you live? (Good idea is to put general location and/or growing zone next to your name...) Yes, Sempervivums could be grown indoors but usually they don't look their best. I am not sure if they are better off with having to spend winter outside (some plants have to have x number of cold days to grow well); unless you get them really good light during winter they usually look quite sad. During summer it may not make that much difference. But amount of light is always less indoors than outdoors. But if you don't have access to garden or deck-balcony, you have to just do it indoors. Many ppl have to, living in apartments without balcony or any other outdoor space. All of the succulents need lots of light otherwise they stretch as I already mentioned about Painted lady. I use lots of supplemental lighting in winter, and probably will improve even more next winter. here is same Echeveria purpusorum, still indoors (March) and blooming, under lights: Adding more perlite definitely helps.

Sadly, just because a bagged soil is called 'cactus soil' that doesn't necessarily mean it's any good for cacti and succulents as we've said many times before, it's just sales blurb. They will die in that mix whatever their size, large or small, the result will be the same. Can't tell what the planter/s look like size wise in relation to the plants or whether it's one big planter, but whichever, there's way too much unused 'peaty' type compost. It will cause one of two things to happen...if you water thoroughly which they will need (but they also need to drain properly) it will stay wet and they'll rot. Failing that, the soil may become hydrophobic, you will think you are watering it but it will stay dry at the roots, as spray bottles don't water efficiently. Please do a search for a more suitable mix using the search box a the top, your plants will thank you in the end. Gill

all year good weather? haha, last winter we had 3 months where the temp. didnt get above 0C, the coldest we had here where i live was about -8c and i live in one of the milder zones of our country :) what made u think we have nice weather here?

Are you going to try some more Opuntias? You probably know this already, but there are other Opuntias that should be hardy in Denmark.

That's looking good there - it's exciting to see others' cold-hardy beds and how they're doing.

Yes, Opuntia polyacantha and O. fragilis should do well for you. The next time I am in Denmark (which will be the first time, too) I'll bring pads of both for you.

You may have blossoms next year!!!

I have several hardy opuntias which have fruited this year. If you weren't so far, I'd say send me a SASE and I'd fill it for you, but I bet it would be quite a bit of trouble to send a self addressed stamped envelope to WV USA. Shipping would be pretty wild I bet.

But if you can't find any, give me a yell. I could probably put quite a bit of seeds in a padded envelope.

We had three feet of snow and negative 9 degrees F (a little chilly)

just a small update on the opuntias :)
hi there, so we've been covered in snow since the end of nov. but today it melted away, so i got a chance to look around in the garden. and i gotta say i was surprised to see how my opuntias were doing. i was expecting to see some ugly wrinkled up plants but found this

That is a very good question, they should have dehydrated long before the snow.
