A welcome home surprise from cuttings: Bri - Brenda

When I left for my trip, on Oct. 31st, these cuttings were all starting to show signs of growth. I'd hoped that, upon my return, they would be far enough along to take some pics and share. Well when I got back, late last night, I was amazed to see this:

This group of five cuttings are yellow noids, from Bri. These are my very first cuttings, from a member of this forum, so they will always be special to me. Bri offered these, completely unsolicited. They arrived on Oct 9th. I put them in water for a few days, then potted them up on the 15th:

This next group is from Brenda. You all remember the "Newbie Contest"! Brenda sent me 13 cuttings. These will always be special because... well... they're from Brenda! They arrived on Oct 16, with the rooting process already begun, and were potted up on the 19th. Adeline and Daydreams didn't make it.:(

Very soon, I hope to post pics of cuttings from Margaret (pearlgirl). Margaret sent me four noids; white, yellow and two orange, also unsolicited. They arrived, and were potted just before I left for my trip. They are now just showing signs of life.

Wow, your plants are doing great! Wish mine could be outside right now! You'll have these puppies up and blooming in no time!!

Stephanie, I have White Cap and Ilse Khron Superior in the rose tunnel...as far as the HT type white climbers. I'm leaning more toward White Cap because of it's fragrance...and it is more graceful...so far. We've got pigeons, not doves..although they are gorgeous pigeons. I hope that the pigeons will learn to avoid the cats. My three dogs do dig for voles...it's a mess..I'm home all day and I can't stop them. They tend to do it when I'm inside and their alone outside. The answer, of course, is to keep them with me all the time. Sometimes, however, I do need a break from Savannah aka Magilla's big slobber kisses which are constant...ask the kittens... I've never seen spider mites on my brugmansias...I'll keep an eye on these though. If they get them, I'm not sure what I would do except perhaps hit them with the hose some more. I did pick up a pink brugmansia at Smithfield on Sunday... Now I have white, yellow, and pink...and, each year they come back bigger than the year before. But, they don't usually bloom until around October. I'd like to find a spot against a hot wall to get some to bloom earlier. Stephanie, if you want some of my gopher's spurge, you're more than welcome to take it...I've got loads of it, and, although some consider it aggressive/invasive, I've not tired of it. It's easy enough to pull it out where you don't want it. Connie, you seem to be somewhat of an expert on the bananas. I just picked up a red leaf variety..this one I'll need to bring inside at the end of summer; it's a zone 9 variety. I'm planning on planting it into the ground in my tropical bed, then in November, dig it up, wrap it in burlap, and throw it under my crawlspace in the basement..I've heard that's all it takes. What do you think? I hope Strange's has another with the chartreuse leaves...I'm hooked on that color right now. You should see the newly painted Andirondack chairs my dad made for us...he actually grew the trees, chopped them down, planed the wood, cut out the pieces, and put it together...impressed? I am. Ahhhhhhhhhh, shucks!!! A little bit of blushing going on here. When I did the interview, I did not know I was gonna be featured as a hybridizer! That's a nice surprise! I hope it encourages more folks to try their hand at it. That first seedpod is like the first brug blossom. So, Elizabeth, I wanna see photos of your success. Thanks for the compliments. And y'all, I usually wear my hair up, it is waaaaay too humid in GA to wear it down. That's so funny how you pictured me, Karyn, my hubby would love for me to have a pageboy! The shorter the better. I look like the hippie I used to be 30 years ago in that photo! ..........it is nice to see folks' faces. I even got to see the elusive Mike, on FB!!! And it was a treat. Thanks, Fred and all!!

Ah, shucks!!! Y'all are tooooooooo sweet! Well, why not share the beauty, and I got plenty to share. Anyone passing thru Georgia on their way north or south, stop in and I'll load ya up!!! Yippee, April, I just glanced up a few minutes ago while I was outside and I have at least one Brenda's Beauty blossom's ready to spread her skirts! Glad to hear yours is loaded. Kristy the disk that was out of place was pushed against the syatic nerve,the Dr said he might have some numbness(sp)in his leg for a while but,I don't think Mike really knew what is was gonna be like,I do know he is having a time with it,he goes back to the Dr Monday so hopefully they will be able to tell more about it. Now Steph my DIL that just had the baby,is having some problems with her heart,she went to the Dr today and they told her it seems to be skipping a beat,she is only 25 years old,she has to go back on the 23rd for more test,so please pray for her. Please everybody don't get upset with me I have to talk to someone,and you guys really seem to care,but I am sorry if my post bothers anyone,I just can't seem to handle all this alone. Hugs Bonnie

I have been carefully considering where to plant these guys. Not sure that I have room for 20 new plants in the gardens, so some may need to remain potted. Its already a jungle out there.

Yes, Lucy... Laura was thrilled to have me home... let's see how long that lasts! lol

All of these plants need to be repotted... some of the pots were rooted to the ground! They have been in bright shade, during the rooting process... should I start moving them into the sun? Should I start them on some light fertilizer, or wait till spring? Any other suggestions?

Bob, since your plants are actively growing in Florida at this time of year, Sure, go ahead and up pot the ones rooting into the ground. You can give them regular fertilizer now, too. Wait a little longer on the more recent cuttings but sure, give them some fertilizer too, just not as strong. Your season is just the opposite of most of ours, except for our California members. This is your season for blossoms- when it finally cools off in your area! Aren't your neighbor's Frosty Pink blooming right now? And yes, you can leave them in pots year round. That way, if a frost threatens like happened last winter down your way, you can drag them into the garage! I nestle my big potted brugs into my shrubs and perrennials- the plant is is the sun and the pots are shaded, so they do not get as hot.
And tell you wife, congrats!! She will enjoy the blossoms as much as you!!

I have repotted, and fertilized, all of the cuttings pictured above. Should I start watering them every couple of days, or so?

Oh yea I'm so happy for you Bob! Looks like my pieces found a great home. The noid yellow was surprisingly orange this last flush, maybe b/c the cooler weather. And I have some very slow growing brugs, but this one gets HUGE so keep that in mind when you plant. I just took a cutting the size of my arm. I can't wait till they bloom for you!

Bob I see no answer yet so I try. When I get so many leaves like your cuttings show. Meaning you got nice roots going most likely. Meaning they are thirsty. I had to learn the hard way that with the weather in the 70s now, they do NOT need a lot of water to keep them happy and going. But usually I watered them good once a day at least lol. Now I just make sure it is warm enough so I water around noon. A brug is a thirsty plant. _So unless you would have water in the 50s all the time,ha ha ha just rememberd you mentioning that you freezing your butt of in those temps below , what was it...63? lol
But if your days are still *hot* , once a day might help them be more stable. I hate for them to go into withdrawal shock lol

Maybe someone can give you better advise. Just my thoughts to it and what I DO.

If all fails...just let Laura continue to take care of them lol
