Should I recut the jade plant cutting I received?

I received a small jade plant cutting potted in heavy soil. I cleaned it off only to find there are no roots! It's was recently cut and someone just popped it into the dirt.

So I brushed it off, gave the cut end a quick rinse and have it sitting here. Can I just place it in some gritty mix/well draining soil and water rarely for a couple months until it roots?

Or (not knowing how it was originally treated) should I cut the end of the stem again, then let it sit in the open till it callouses and then repot it?
