Help! Mandarin choices

I have been looking locally for a Satsuma Mandarin since I know from experience that my family loves them. But when I went to Costco and saw all their Citrus I succumbed to the temptaion. Yet they did not ahve a Satsuma. They had Murcott, Honey and another varietyt that I can't remember. I bought honey, but now after all of the research I have done online trying to find accurate descriptions of the variety, I am confused.

I want a mandarin that is seedless or very nearly so and that is easy to peel. Without these two things my children will not eat them. (They will eat seedless ones if I peel them, but I love handing over the work.) Is anyone familiar with this variety or other mandarin varieties? Please tell me how you feel abou them. Thanks

Hi Uptomyeyeballs,

My one and only fav is the owari satsuma. Seedless, Sweet and Super easy to peel. You can get these at OSH from fourwindsgrowers at a great price if you are in Cali. Check out the link from UCR if you want info on most of the Mandarins available in the US.

There are a few new releases of Mandarins from UCR that you might want to look into. Shasta, Tahoe, Yosemite and Gold Nugget. The Brand new one TANGO I just had at the anniversary event out there and it was GOOD. Probably won't be able to find it anywhere for a while though...

For zone 8, your only choice is satsuma unless you grow it in a pot. Honey murcott is full of seeds.

Well, you're in the middle of your summer, so for a tree that has been accustomed to full shade, I would probably consider providing it a little shade in the afternoon, so it doesn't fry as it gets used to being in full sun. Don't amend your hole, just plant in your native soil. Be sure it isn't planted any deeper than it was previously. You can top dress the tree with compost if you want. Water appropriately, and once the tree recovers from transplant shock, and starts to put out some flush, fertilize with a high quality citrus fertilizer. Will it survive? Possibly, if it can recover from transplant shock and if it is watered appropriately and fertilized appropriately :-) Citrus are amazingly resilient. Patty S.

I read a lot regarding the different mandarin types and came to the conclusion because the following: - tree almost thornless, rind leathery and bumpy, with large prominent oil glands. Axis hollow, segments are almost separated, not too sweet, almost no seeds. The flesh is orange but not deep orange. Then my mom told me that when she bought it, it came with a tag that said Satsuma ... lol . She bought it and i saw her at her garden, so neglected it had never produced any fruit, she couldnt even remember what kind of citrus it was. I adopted her and now that she sees the mandarins she remembered! So end of mistery. They are not the best mandarins I have ever tried but I am proud of them!

I agree with Silica. Citrus do like sun but when a tree has been in a shaded area for a long while they need to be introduced to the sun slowly over a period of several weeks. Do you have a patio umbrella around? You could set it over the tree and give it some temporary shade. Luckily the temps will be going down this week, that will help too. Don't be surprised if these leaves drop over the next few weeks. The tree should replace them with leaves better suited to more sun. Otherwise the tree looks pretty good.

Steve, this picture is about a week or so old and it does have small starter flowers on it. The tree is about 4 years old.The seeds came from a tree belonging to a local nursery that has this 7 ' tree growing in the corner of a kind of crummy greenhouse. I pass this place once a week in the spring/summer to buy vegetable plants and pick some fruits, eat the whole thing and spit out the seeds, except a couple. Trim this tree a little so it can roll in the garage easily.Laura, most old time citrus growers is a must have. I am not kidding. Btw, i am not an old citrus timer but i,m an old timer, this thing is right up your ally, it's juicy, not overly sweet, lots of tang. Go for it!

www.briteleaf.com and www.harriscitrus.com both sell Mandarins at fantastic prices..What you'll get is a tree at least 4' in size. Some even have fruits already..Toni

Thanks for your help and ideas, as for zone problems, we really don't get hard freezes often. We can grow many varieties here, we just have to be careful about location. In fact the streets of downtown Sacramento are lined with orange trees and there are Several varieties of mandarin etc. in Capital park.
I will stick with my original plan to get a Satsuma. It sounds like the best plan and I look forward to eating them in the future.
