They will not cross pollenate. Not viably, any way. I grow both, but have never had much success planting them close together. The Dats don't need as much feeding as the brugs and can even suffer from too much feeding.

Bush Moon Flower sounds like a Datura innoxia or wrighti. But it's hard to tell with common names.

Datura are very easy to grow from seeds. Most are annuals or short lived perrenials. (depending on your zone) You could probably sew them outside right now and they wouldn't come up until spring. But I generally start mine inside in late Feb. or March. They don't like being transplanted very much. I use Jiffy pellets so I can move that intact into a cup or small pot until it's warm enough to harden them off and plant outside.

Okay I won't say a word to tngreenthumb as to what we are doing here, mums the word.

We don't recommend them growing side by side, their environmental conditions are not the same. Then there is the virus and insect problems that one attracts that the other should avoid. I suggest separate areas for them other if at all possible. It's also like don't grow your tomatoes next to them either! All carry a gene for a virus and you want to keep them healthy.

Hey, I've read your posts. But they don't normally do that on their own. And it's certainly not something to worry about.

I've been growing double daturas about two feet in front of my brugs for several seasons and have never had a problem. If you have a virus it might very well spread but I haven't run into that.

I've also grown yellow triple daturas and white around a brug and except for a mold/mildew/fungus desease that did spread through the 'hardy' tuberous whites and the dahlias and touched on a few of the one brug's leaves, it would of been a great display if not for the removal of leaves. If I had known what this was...I could of stopped it earlier.

The yellow and purple (perennials in a 6a pocket zone don't know for other zones off hand) were much more weather and disease resistant. No problems with 'whatever' went through the surrounding plants. And stayed green up and blooming up until the first below freezing temps hit...there still green out there this 11/19/07.

Although any plant too close to your brug is gonna be in the way come dig up time, so you might just want to arc around the brug or plan to rip them out. I find some brug's roots are near surface crawlers and have to carefully escavated out from beyond the foot or so you dig out and wrapped the extended roots around the main root ball(1' out from the brug trunk in all directions - taking dirt away as needed for your storage pot)- unless you do it jroot's and tngreenthumbs way. They've both posted data on their way. Keeping it in a pot all year round but in the ground with holes in the sides.

Daturas don't bloom as brugs do, there's fewer of those compared to the flushes of a brug, but the yellows and purple last a few days longer than the whites although they don't branch as fast and so fewer blooms. Mind you I start all my seedlings as doubles and so never have the heart to remove one. 2 plants share a tight zone for roots and as small as their root systems are this may be a factor. Even 6" apart would probably make a difference. 8" for the hardy tuberous whites (though their tubers grow longer).

I'll find out next spring how 'hardy' they really are, though I could of brought them in, treating them like dahlias. Maybe I'll bring in a couple.

Ps Virus' are over my head...I just won't worry and hope for the best. I think it's fair to believe that probabilities increase with time in this area. I have neem oil and earwig killer for early next spring. Hopefully the neem will take care of all bad insects and the earwigs to.

The pics failed me again. Well at least you can see them and if you click on the pic and wait you should get a little box in the lower right corner (green with arrows pointing N. E. S. & West.) You can zoom when you click on it for closer scanning of the garden/flowers etc.

For those who were interested from an earlier post. These are the 2 water jugs holding the red impatience and triple daturas (only 1 bud shows on left). They are lifted about 18" from the ground via bottles. They sit on each side of the brug in the picture of the last link above. They also sit on top of a portion of 2 oriental lily beds and bee balm plants that have died back.

There's a lot spring garden plants in my garden. And some new annuals that aren't very big yet, including a snow ball (soft ball size) and double bloom pink rose of sharons as they won't reseed as all my other rose of sharons do - I love the long blooming flowering but scraping the soil with a spade so much of the season is a pain. I have a lot of plants where their seedlings do land. Perfect for just a hedge if your patient enough.

Apparently a problem in Europe I guess, but as Karma had pointed out, there is a virus here in the US that can spread to Brugs from your dats.

I wanted to try this but because they have such differing needs - (and the warning about a virus) I was going to use Iochs in between the Brugs and the Dats (big, bigger, biggest!) to go from the hot brutal sun to the shadier areas.

I also received a tip from a gentleman about Rhodies in the ground here in Illinois to prevent winter burn - an antidessicant with diluted pine tar! So now I have an option for the shade under the maples!

Boy it's gonna be a loooooooooong winter for me. (grin)

Thanks dweeb, Monika has writen an article on the virus that is there in Europe for ABADS's newsletter a few issues ago and I know of several folks that have had some problems here on USA soil. I will tell you this year's tomatoe crop was a disaster and we had Daturas within a couple feet of them. Yes these were disease resistant tomatoes and we won't be planting them that close again.

Im gonna plant the dats away from the Brugs. Will they do okay in semi shade. My brugs will stay in the ground. No digging up here. My Dr. Suess has lived outside for 3 years. I guess Im lucky with that. It will just be hard until I get them in the ground. After that it just gets better after that.

Daturas normally like more sun then brugs. All my dats do well in full sun conditions.

Some of my triple yellow and 1 double purple did great in the shade. The purple hardly got any sun except for maybe 2 hours when the sun was directly overhead. Had whites blooming in the shade to but don't know if they grow well because it took me too long to plant them and they were stuck in little peat pellets quite a while. One of those latter factors (too late or too long in a small pot) is probably responsible if not both.

I only had the 2 'hardy' varieties of white and the yellow in full sun. They did well too. Only the belle blanche I am sure are hardy in my zone, as reported by the neighbor who gave me the seeds. He also says their root system can be a problem if left in too many years. They have a tuberous system and seem quite controllable but I'll checking on them each year. Maybe they have runner roots that start babies off them like the southern dreaded Trumpet vine.

Karyn: So glad to hear Dats like more sun than Brugs. First time growing Dats, and my poor Brugs suffer so from the intense sun and heat in my zone. In addition to softening the trunks of the Brugs, I was hoping to plant Dats to help shade the root area of the young Brugs. Sounds as if when a virus is present, both Dats and Brugs are susceptable, but the Dats don't actually cause the virus. Hope I getting this right! "G> Gloria

From What I have been told on my other post Dont grow Brugs and Dats togeter. They dont like the same soil conditioning.

J4J - I was told the dats don't like the heavy feeding and so much water like the brugs - not so much the soil contitioning. It's the feeding and watering the Dats don't really care for. I could have misunderstood though.

My dats loved the sun. Some of my Brugs just pouted in hot sun.

Re: Virus - if I'm understanding what I read - some dats can carry this virus before they show the symptoms - which will spread to the Brugs quickly - so by the time your Dats show the symptoms - it's too late. Your Brugs have it.

I think Karyn gave me the advice - plant dats next to Brugs you're willing to lose (destroy) if they become infected. Don't know about you - but I don't want to lose any (grin).

Soooo. . .I'll put Iochs in between. Doesn't guarantee if there's something out there that biting/sucking insects won't spread it, but at least I'll have a good distance between the two.

It is my understanding that the Brugmansias prefer the heavier clay and soil mix where Daturas prefer the rich soils and no fertilizer w/drier conditions and full sun.
It really depends on the variety of Brugmansia as to what environment it should be grown in.

Mine are are pretty much altogether in various areas of the yard which either have or have not any peat moss. There was a little peat moss added in the small hole they were initially planted in. The brug that grew the best was in peat moss and added soil but the whole yard is in a clay based soil. Practically solid clay about a foot deeper. My daturas did all right but I've no idea how much better they may have done in a more plant specific soil.

I have to retract my observation about the purple not being touched by that disease I mentioned. Seems it moved up the garden after all the plants down (wind?)the garden were removed. The yellow are the only ones that didn't get affected among the 4 kinds I have.
