Carolina Gardening

Relocating to Hartsville, SC

Hello:

My husband just accepted a job in Hartsville, SC. He is due to start the new job in December. We are relocating from the mid-Hudson Valley in New York State. I am looking forward to the long gardening season that you have! I'll be going from zone 5 to zone 8!! I will have to change my user name. Gardening is my therapy.

I am interested in knowing what your soil is like. I've got "Hudson Valley Cheap Fill." When they built my house, they scraped off the rich topsoil and filled in with sandy, rocky soil with rocks so big that I have lined my garden beds with them. Some of the rocks are bigger than my girls' heads!

Also, I wanted to check out if there are any good, local gardening stores beyond the Wal-Mart type.

Is there anyone gardening in this area?

As near as I am to Hartsville I can't really tell you exactly what kind of soil you will find. Typically SC gardens are either clay or sand - with little mix of the two. But the areas of either type vein together so that within one county you can have both kinds very close together. My guess would be that you'll have the sandy kind. And around here you have to buy rocks. No lie.

That said, I just want to welcome you to South Carolina! And you have chosen a GREAT time to come on down. I just hope next summer will be MUCH milder than this one has been so that you can get used to it more gradually.

SC Availability of Compost and Mulch

In the Myrtle Beach area you will find quite a few landscape supply companies, and small nurseries, that provide a variety of mulches and plants. Cypress, hardwood, and pine straw mulch are the most commonly used. I am not sure about the compost. Some of the smaller nurseries may carry that in bulk, otherwise you will need check with the retail stores or make your own.

Bobbie...do you send herbs to your friends thru the mail? I talked to a woman this spring in the PO in Hartsville, who was sending herb plants to friends. She also said she grew orchids. I was thinking...there can't be too many people like that in Hartsville! But on second thought, I don't know if you're a man or a woman. I have the same trouble with my name. Guerry (girl)

I realize this thread is old, but wanted to post anyway. My fiance & I are soon going to have a 14x80 (maybe 16x80) SW moved approx. 8 miles, all in the country in MO and it is going to cost us $1700. That includes them doing everything: putting on axles, moving, setting up, etc... But, I can't imagine how much your situation would cost, I think I might just buy a new SW or DW instead.

Welcome to the south! I just started gardening up in Greenville (zone 7b) this past year when I bought a house. Hit your local library and see what gardening books they have.

Three I found very useful:
Tough Plants for Southern Gardens- Felder Rushing
Southern Living Garden Problem Solver
Southern Living Garden Book

Bulletproof Flowers for the South is also worth a look.

Pretty much everything I've planted that isn't an annual was something from Felder Rushing's book.

My friend Bobbie and I are also huge fans of driving around looking to see what is growing in people's yards and also some businesses have pretty neat (beyond the ordinary pot of petunias/pansies) landscaping. One way I've gotten ideas and anything growing in a parking lot must do pretty well in the area.

Now you just have to decide if you are going to cheer for Clemson or Carolina... GO TIGERS!!!!!
