Finally have a yard!!! Now what?

Just moved in this summer. I've done vegetable gardens, but never had any room for anything else before.

I planted some Iris rhizomes and some daylilies (orange and tiger). Also one lavender plant, black-eyed susans, hyacinths, and tulips.

Unfortunately I only just discovered this forum and already learned that tulips and hyacinths might not last long in NC (I grew up in upstate NY).

I am ecstatic about having blooms and edibles year-round ... anything else I can get in for spring? How about for winter? I wouldn't do anything too needy, I'm just a beginner and so far I haven't killed anything (I'd like to keep that record!)

Sorry for the novel ... send suggestions for a year-round low-maintenance garden! (If it's fragrant, edible, or pretty, that's a plus!)

Thanks so much!

Jamie
