These are very thin plastic blinds, the cheap ones. You can almost see through them :0). Okay they aren't THAT thin but I've found that plants low or on the floor get a fair amount of light if the blinds point down. I have begun to realize that plants need more light that I previously thought, but this room is fairly bright all day because of the thinness of the blinds. The can be opened some throughout the day. I'm getting the plant from my father, I have to find the soil myself. I think I'm going to get Cactus soil. It may not be the best but I'm sure it's better than what I can do since I've never mixed soil. The only real nursery around oddly enough has decided not to carry accessories anymore including soil so it's Kmart, Home Depot, or Lowes for dirt and supplies. I'm prone to over watering so it's going to be a real challenge to get used to this one. If I can keep it alive them maybe my "black thumb" will be less black. Not a green thumb, but not as bad as I hve been. As for toxicity, I was wondering is a Snake Plant is toxic. I can't find it listed on any vet related websites. I'm told that most succulents are NOT toxic but that's pretty general.

Hello, I just found this forum. I had no idea there was a whole organization just for this type of plant. Anyway, my neighbor gave me a snake plant about ten years ago, which was pretty scruffy looking. It is taller than I am now, which is 5'4". What a great species. It has done well. We have put it in a bigger pot, and now it is crowding out that one. It flowers several times a year and smells absolutely heavenly. But it's strong, and my husband made me move it away from his desk. It gets a southern exposure in a sunny room. So, should we put it in yet another pot? The one it's in is a 12" x 12" straight-sided cylinder, very heavy ceramic. I don't know how I'd get it out of there. It's a pretty, contemporary white glazed style, too. I'd rather not break it. Do I have to repot it? Will it be a lot happier if I do? I want it to be happy.

Karen - your being paranoid :-) I can hardly think of a more harmless snake than a ribbon snake. They are rather small, delicate and could never harm you, even if you grabbed it with both hands :-) The fact that it was in your car was very unlikely, the possibility of another one being there is nil. Yes, it should be repotted. I don't know that repotting will stop the flowering but if you are very worried about that, wait till it is done flowering. Not ideal to repot in the fall, but should not be a problem either. Nice plant by the way! I can't see the dirt very well, but you will want a fast draining mix, at the very least a cactus mix with extra perlite added by you. I keep most of my Sansevieria in unglazed terracotta. You have done well with your plant so you don't need any lectures, LOL! Good luck and enjoy the Flowers!
