Long term trip preparation

I've failed miserably for years with citrus, and thanks to this forum and Al's gravel mix, have finally "gotten there". Our family plans for the future involve extensive travel, 2-6 weeks at a time, and I don't want to lose the citrus that I've worked so hard to grow.

We're in Connecticut, and for the summer I have set up an automatic drip watering system outside, with fertilizer injection (EZ Flow hose bib fertilizing system). I used the system last year (without the fertilizer), and it worked well except for a yellowing Oro Blanco grapefruit. (the leaves).

But for the winter, my best guess at what to do is put them all in the garage and hope. It doesn't get below freezing, and there's a single north-facing window. I would guess avg. temp. in the winter in the garage is 45 - 55ú F. Considering my past problems with scale and mites, they might be better off in the garage than in my kitchen and sunroom, as in the past.

Anyone else have this problem and how did you solve it?

thanks in advance!
