Topdog, I have a huge grapefruit tree in my backyard(it is a yellow variety) and i'm not sure if it is always growing, but it's always doing something. I think it has maybe 2 or so growth spurts that are mainly at the top, but at other times of the year, it is absolutely covered with flowers or grapefruits. I'd say there is nothing wrong with your tree, mine just finished flowering and will start growing more grapefruits now. Best of luck!

Topdog, is the fertilizer you're using say it is to be used Citrus? It certainly has a LOT of nitrogen, but what about P and K? Does it contain minerals such as iron, etc? I know all fertilizers are different, but do the instructions state to use once a month? Toni

As for Toni's questions I am following instruction from the Texas A+M website. It states that 21-0-0(ammonia sulfate) is MOSTLY all that is needed and to feed 1 cup Feb.-Oct. I have also added an Iron supplement with a soil acidifer in it. I followed the instuctions on the product.
My other trees seem to respond to this fertilizing and this grapefruit did for a while but the breaks have come on and I can't get it to budge. Do grapefruit trees have flushes like other citrus? The tree looks healthy and green but it has just stopped growing. Thanks, topdog

Yes, grapefruit does flush and then there is a time where that new flush does not seem to do much, but the new growth is maturing and building the strength of the tree.
I would cut back on the fertilizer. I would think you only need to fert. about twice a year. If you do too much you will get all green and no fruit or if way to much you can actually kill the tree. Time the first application to be about the time of the first spring flush. The second in the late summer so it will have time to be useful before the tree hardens and slows for winter.
Remember it's a tree, not a squash. Squash grow real quick one season and they are done. Trees grow more slowly and over time the build good structure and will grow better and better fruit.

That sounds like some solid advice. I will cut back some on the fert., be patient, enjoy the tree little more and worry about it a little less. It's funny you mention ,"it's a tree , not a squash". I've been growing a vegetable garden the past 3 years and really enjoy it. I kinda have the mentality when I go look at my trees (everyday) I expect to see somthing different after a few days like with the veggies. Not so with the trees, it is a long term project and not a spring fling like with the veggies. THANKS!

Go to lsuagcenter.com, then type in home citrus production. This is great information. Lone star super lawn and turf builder is a great fertilizer for citrus in the golden triangle. It is a 15-5-10 with trace elements built into the fertilizer.

I have several grapefruit trees, and just because it isn't growing at the top, it's actually growing stronger inside the soil, with longer roots and such.

Ever wonder why a citrus plant grows and fruits in a pot, yet when you plant it in the ground, it sometimes takes years to fruit again? It's pretty much the same. When in a pot, its roots have spread about as far as they can spread. So, it does what it does naturally, blooms and fruits.

When in the ground, it has to completely re-establish the roots, but there is pretty much no boundaries in the ground like there are in a pot. I've even heard that the more nutrients that are in the ground, the longer it could potentially take to fruit.

Citrus (and many other) trees go through the root strengthening mode and then a growth mode. Even when in a full growth mode, fruiting isn't always the best.

My lemons, limes, and kumquats have fruited the first year in the ground, but most other citrus will take between 2 and 7 years. Grapefruits are kind of like tortoises though. They are slow, but they do get around to it eventually.
