Stunning, as ever!

What are the piles of cut branches in pics 1 & 2 for? Are they for starting the prescribed burn signposted in pic 3?

Is the colour in all the pics as it is, or do they have a bit of a red cast to them compared with reality?

Hi all. I recently traveled through Buford Wyoming and stopped to visit the Tree Rock. A famous tree that seems to sprout from solid rock, preserved between the east and west lanes of I-80. The lone pine tree has been fascinating travelers since the first railroad passed through in 1867. The tree is a somewhat stunted and twisted limber pine (Pinus flexilis), a type of tree commonly found in this area where ponderosa and limber pines dominate the landscape. The age of the tree is unknown, although limber pines can live as long as 2,000 years. The tree grows out of a crack in a boulder of Precambrian era pink Sherman granite formed more than 1-4 billion years ago. I was lucky enough to find one of it's pine cones laying at the bottom of the rock. I had thought to myself that maybe I could retrieve the seeds from the cone and transplant a relative to the tree here in Northern Wisconsin. I don't know much other than what I have recently read on this forum so, if anyone has any suggestions on how to get started or whither or not it will work, I'm all ears. or should I say eyes. How neat would that be to have a sibling of the one that is in Wyoming that is visited by tourist everyday. Any info and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have three specimens of this cultivar, all from Bob Fincham of course. Bought as probably the same stock grafts over the previous three years. First, full sun is best IMO, though perhaps in severe heat/sun it may burn a little bit? No experience with this so far in my mild zone, similar to Dave's. Next growth rate. I think my specimens have grown about 4-5" a year of the upper most branches and an inch or two less on the lower ones. To me it doesn't seem particular slow or fast, I'd suggest the plant might be 3'x2'(widextall) in 10 years. A medium dwarf would be my best description. One caveat, Bob Fincham has stated that he has seen unusual faster upright growth. Given that sometimes it does this, I would say that the growth rate on this plant isn't very stable. Mine seems to be growing faster then Dave's and some may grow slower/faster in different climates. Time will tell or perhaps one of the super-seasoned experts might chime in. A final note, I find this plant to be superior to 'Chief Joseph'. Blasphemy to many I know, but it's incredibly bright in Summer and Fall and still a nice color the rest of the year. And it would be hard for it to be as fussy as the Chief. -Will

That little fella looked like this when i found it: We started calling it Maggs (short for maggot for it did look like one). And it earned a name because I kept forgetting to move it out of the path of cats exiting from the cat door, so it would spill, get repotted and start trauma recovery all over again! The pot in question (the one that looks like a tree trunk) is made of some kind of resin, I think. I'm actually very proud of that particular seedling, Tracy. It's one of my 2 do-not-disturb seedlings, i.e. I have not bothered them at all since they moved out of the crib! I usually just unpot these things when I get curious or feel like experimenting. Those seedlings growing under weeds, for example lol I planted them there last spring, Kadie, just to see how they grow. Then of course I forgot about them. I've since removed the weeds. I'll post a pic if they start doing anything interesting. I'll try to post more often once I'm done dealing with the doors (long story). The cats love their new yard but I keep getting dead voles! Resin, the brush piles are either burned or left for wildlife habitat depending on the burn prescription, as I understand.
The pics should be accurate. 'Colorado' is Spanish for the color red. ;)

Get one large rock...(a couple of tons will do), insert seed in crack and wait....

The "strip-barking" on the aristata is just plain old damage, probably from scraping of a falling tree. But the old limbers show real strip-barking, due to the death of erosion-exposed roots leading to death by dessication of the trunk sectors watered by those roots.

T, isn't that seedling something. My guess is it will survive what, maybe 10, 20, 30 years? The wind knocks it off the rock, and a few decades later another random seed starts the process again. Maybe that story continues to repeat itself time and time again over the centuries.

pinetree, is it possible the yellow highlighted trunk section is stripbarking, as compared to the pink branch sections?

That looped stem has dead branches sticking out as though they were present when the tree was knocked and held down, so there is plenty of physical damage. The upper end of that pink area looks like branches broke out of it. But sure, could be a combination of things going on.
