Aloe Vera Cuttings

I recently gathered up the courage to cut off the pups attached to my aloe vera. I Managed to donate some of the mother plants roots to the three pups with no problem. I wanted to know if I can leave two attached together to make a double headed aloe vera or will they just die if left together?

They will grow fine together.

I would have simply cut the pups off as low as possible, leaving no attached roots to avoid disturbing the parent plant's roots, and inviting a melt down. Lay the pups on their side for a week or so, then plant in dry soil, and wait for roots to form. Pups need to be large enough to survive several weeks or months without getting any water. Very small pups w may not survive.

Don't repot any of these for a few days to let open wounds callous. Take your time, there is no hurry to do anything.

Oh.. I repotted them the next day after callousing them over night. I put them in dry soil and did not water them. I couldn't help giving them roots, they were right at the bottom of the pups and I wasn't sure what I should do. Are my plants going to be fine?

I don't think it will heal, but, if you wanted to leave them the way it is, I don't think you're going to hurt the plant. I've heard that, if you want to get rid of those leaves, to cut a nick into them. This will cause the plant to pull the moisture back into the plant, and withering the leaf. The withered leaf can then be removed without damaging the plant. I've never tried this though. If you decide to cut the leaf off, I suggest sprinkling some cinnamon on the cut afterwards, it acts as an anti-fungal agent.

No, leaf starts will not work for the genus Aloe. You need an entire cross section of stem to root. Propagate by removing offsets (pups). There are two forms of Aloe vera. One makes orange flowers, the other yellow. The latter is sometimes called Aloe barbadensis, and is thought to be the original form of the species before domestication. It is relatively rare.

Some people say to let the cutting sit out a few days to get crusted over first. I've done it by waiting and not waiting. The theory of why you would want to wait is good so you can go with that if you don't want to take chances. Use a similar soil as what you're growing in, if it's from a pot. I've also had success with sticking it in the garden and it grows from there.

Are your plants going to be fine? Is the sun going to rise tomorrow? In both cases, probably.

Have you read the FAQ? Don't water your cuttings (mist only) and don't micromanage them - they will appreciate your light hand.
