Check out the long tube that he eats with. I had no idea they could stick out their tongues that far, lol. He ran me away from Frosty Pink and kept flying into the camera. I didn't realize I got him in the pic til I downloaded it, lol.

Madi (my DD) said it looked like a flying mouse! lol He's definitely headed right for that brug.

Great shots! Strouper, that beauty you have there is a Hemaris thysbe :) Haven't tried taking pics of mine this year, but they come in droves in early evening and early morning. There faves are the Nicotiana, Petunia, Catmint, Salvia officinalis most year in my garden. Last year was the fist with 4 O'clocks and those became popular choices too :) This pic was taken in 2004 or 2005 of the White-lined Sphinx Moth on the Nicotiana. Not at all a great pic; camera phones sure have come a long way since LOL!

Ah, the jungle!! Looks so lush there. Congrats on the justicia- it is beautiful and the white blossom is great contrast to the foliage. Your peach brug looks pink in the photos- does it change color as the weather changes? Very pretty! Karyn, sorry about your woes/disappointments- hope you're not waiting on brugs seedlings to bloom, too!

Wildcat, your first pics show two different sphinxes. The top pic is that of the tobacco worm, Manduca sexta. However, the bottom pic is that of a white-lined sphinx, Hyles lineata. Lineatas are known to get on tomatoes and grape vines. They are one of the nation's most common [and most beautiful] sphingids as their larval diet is so diversified. One thing to understand about the nightshade-eating sphingids, is that their relationship to Datura and Brugmansia is quite mutualistic, though to us, it looks rather one-sided. Those sphinx larvae or hornworms must have a solanaceous diet and your plants are one thing they can live on. In restropect, those huge, deep-throated flowers are not pollinated by butterflies. Occasionally small wasps can do it, but the sphinx moth [aka hawkmoth or hummingbird moth] are the best pollinators of such blooms. The moths need a lot ofnectar to feed on and the Datura/Brugmansia flower is just the perfect feeder. it's that copious amount of nectar which gives them their famous fragrance, too. The sphinx moth is nocturnal, too. Many Datura bloom best at night, when the moths are active. The benefit to the plants is pollination and ultimately, reproduction, which is worth the price of its foliage, which will grow back in due time. The clearwing sphinx caterpillars are never a pest. The small hornworms feed on honeysuckle among other plants. Their small moths are uniquely diurnal and for protection, mimic the like-sized bumblebees! The sphinxes are truly great insects and are desrving of their place in the yard and garden! I'm glad you did some research on sphingids, Vera. I seriously enjoy rearing these and the beautiful, but non-pollinating saturniids.

It's a White Marked Tussock moth. I figured it was some type of tussock moth. It turns into a drab moth but the caterpillar is so cool. That bush that took over is a Bush Clover (Lespedeza thunbergii). I got it as a little stick at a plant swap 2 years ago. The thing got huge! It was a much more manageable size last year. It had even been eaten almost to the ground by the deer twice earlier this season so I'm really surprised that it got so big. It does attract lots of butterflies and bees and it stays in bloom for a fairly long time. I just wish it wasn't so big. It dies to the ground over the winter. I'm going to see if I can dig any up once it dies back.

He must be the one leaving wing dust inside my brugs. He flew right in my face and nearly made me drop the camera, lol. I am really getting some nice deep pink colors on my brugs. They are a pretty color. My yard is smelling good too. Just came in from bug patrol, lol. Found two new blooms on a Charles Grimaldi opening and a Cotton Candy. Her twangers were glued together at the bottom preventing it from opening. I helped her out so maybe in the morning or tomorrow night it will be open. I see one finger sticking out on the Naughty Nick. Its windy tonight so I sure hope it hangs on long enough to open. I been waiting forever to see it, lol. Have tons of buds on it now though. Most of all the plants have buds. I am so excited!

Flying mouse, lol. They do look like that. Glad Madi enjoyed it. Every time I turn on the porch light or the red light for the night vision on the camera comes on they fly right into the light, lol. It is hard to get a good pic of one flying.

Kristy just make sure your batteries are charged all the time for all the great pictures to come soon.

I bought a second set and always charge one while using the other lol.

I could watch those moth all the time. It is just amazing that such a tiny animal has such a long po...oh I do not think I want to use that word...tongue roflmao
