I found this little guy munching on a brug. I think it's some type of Tussock moth caterpillar but he was so cool looking that I left him alone to finish eating.

I'm sorry those caterpillers are eating your brugs...I find little solid green caterpillers on a couple of my brugs and they get squished!!

Oh...Do you remember a couple years ago you sent me some Iochroma cuttings you didnt know what colors they were because your son mixed them up??..Well, this year, finally, out of the three you sent me, one grew and has buds on it...They are purple!!..I'm SO excited!! :)

We live in Columbus OH and while mowing our hay fields unfortunately hit a mother mallard who had built her nest in the hayfield. The 9 eggs were not damaged so I put them in an incubator. Nine days later, 8 of them hatched. They are now just 2 weeks old so I have a few more weeks with them. From what I have read on the internet, their instincts should take over and come Fall, they should fly South for the Winter as nature intended. For now, they are in a large blow up baby pool in our home office with another one just like it outside with shallow water in it for swimming. For now, I carry them to/from the house in a big box so they can play in the pool outside. I put a board in the pool so when they are ready they just walk up it and jump out of the pool. Since they have imprinted on me, they follow me around our yard foraging for bugs and whatever else they find of interest. Since the pool wont keep them contained for much longer (I dont want to come down one morning and find them all running around the office leaving their calling cards)we are in the process of modifying a 10x10 dog run in our backyard for them to move in to. We fashioned a floor from plywood so predators cannot dig underneath and get them and are putting on a "roof" along with a tarp to protect them from rain. We also put up a 2.5 foot barrier around the edge attached to the walls for extra protection. We will most likely put in some sort of "house" or box for them to get into at night for sleeping. The plan is as they start to grow their adult feathers and attempt flying we will allow them to come and go from the "coop" during the day at will and will lock them up at night for protection. Then, when it is time Im assuming they will leave. I bet they will come back next year though; hopefully. It would be nice to see them again and see how many were able to avoid the hunters.

You sure have a lot of work ahead of you. I read that if you know you are going to move a large plant, tree or shrub, that you dig in a reasonable size to move circle around the plant. Just take the shovel & cut straight down. Don't dig or lift. It will cut off some of the big roots & new smaller ones will take their place & make it a little less stressful. You are supposed to do this as soon as you know you will be moving them but maybe better late than never. I have moved a 8 foot apple tree by doing this a year before I moved it. I re-shoveled about once a month during the growing season. I'd come & help if I lived closer. Linda

Great pictures!! as always, I have around 7 brugmansias, but they look rather poor, Oh the ones I got from prince are looking great! they look like they are taking, tomorrow I will take pictures and post in the evening, this week I am supposed to do a lot of work I am off from work the WHOLE week!! so House work catch up yard work too,a trip to the big city is in order, will go to New Braunfels to the nursery, I was up there Saturday and went to seguin Sunday to the nursery Prince mentioned but as luck would have it they were close for the 4th of July, they do have a bunch of flowers in their landscape very nice too. will try to go there again sometime soon I just don't know how soon. Very cool. I am deathly afraid of sharks and sure hope I don't see any next week. Last time I was in Panama City one nearly ate my sister off a float when we were little, lol. A fisherman had to jump off the pier where they were catching them and go get her. I love those flowers and thats my favorite sort of brug the deep pink ones that look like skin with veins, lol. Yeah I know I'm weird but at least I don't have crabs roflmao.

I'm glad to hear the iochromas did well. I get rid of those little green cats and the brown striped ones too. I think they might be some type of cut worms. I just thought this little guy was so pretty and it's just one. If his buddies come for a buffet I might have to relocate the dinner guests. lol

Sorry Daniella we must have posted at the same time. Yes the CP is extremely fragrant. It's kind of a fruity jasmine scent. I'm going to post the cat on the butterfly forum for an ID but I'm pretty sure it's some type of tussock moth. I get milkweed tussock moths that are similar but not quite as far out looking. Funny how some of the wildest caterpillars turn into such common moths/butterflies and visa versa.

I agree. We had an awesome cat last year..wackiest thing I have ever seen..was so cool. I can't remember off hand what he was, but he turned out to be something so common and boring, it was a disappointment, lol
Be sure to let us know the results if you find out exactly what he is please, I am curious. yeah I know, curiousity killed the cat, lol. har har har. I need to go to bed..

I'm having the same problem with my angel trumpets, oleanders,zinna's,& 4 o'clocks. We have the huge grasshoppers which are immuned to pesticides, and orange caterpillars with long black bristles. Our backyard backs up to the woods, and this the first time I've ever seen these critters...UGH...

Sapphiregirl... Sounds like you may have some Gulf Fritillary cats... They are good guys.. a little on the hungry side. BUT..LOL Do you have Passion Vines around?? That is a host plant for them... here is a pic from a few yrs ago.. of the Butterfly snacking on a Banana peel..

It's a White Marked Tussock moth. I figured it was some type of tussock moth. It turns into a drab moth but the caterpillar is so cool.

That bush that took over is a Bush Clover (Lespedeza thunbergii). I got it as a little stick at a plant swap 2 years ago. The thing got huge! It was a much more manageable size last year. It had even been eaten almost to the ground by the deer twice earlier this season so I'm really surprised that it got so big. It does attract lots of butterflies and bees and it stays in bloom for a fairly long time. I just wish it wasn't so big. It dies to the ground over the winter. I'm going to see if I can dig any up once it dies back.
