Are you concerned about people stealing your plants? Or is it that you are sneaking the plants where technically you are not able to have them? I've heard of putting a stick/pipe inside a large container, then putting a chain around the stick and looping it out through the drainage hole. Is it a concern that people will be harvesting the plants when you aren't there? I don't think tomatoes would do well without serious amounts of light. Beans may or may not need support? Are you in California or in Canada? what zone are you in? You could always plant some oddball variety that people wouldn't recognize and/or notice it was ripe. Like pink or yellow tomatoes. Or banana peppers. Tomatoes are a pain to move. Tried that when major storms were coming through and I needed to move them back from the edge of the balcony. Depending how smooth an entryway you have, rolling planters may or may not work. My patio door entrance really doesn't work for that. It's more of a one-time move with a lot of hassle. The blooms and fruit tended to fall off when I moved the eggplants. Also, what direction do you face? I think there is an urban gardening forum or something like that who potentially could help. I did reasonably well last year with Villa Italia Roma tomatoes, but my balcony faces south. Got bad blossom end rot though. A container of lettuce is movable and will do ok in lower light. But I think that is spring/fall depending where you are. I was a newbie gardener last year, so you may or may not want to listen to me. Alice

I already have a Valencia Dwarf orange tree in a pot and I'm looking for a mandarin to be started in another, and just like you I'm a Cuties fan! Checking out Monterey Bay Nursery, it seems like those guys only deal in wholesale and perhaps with professionals. (not sure if I misinterpreted but this seemed to be the case). I've purchased dwarf citruses in the past from Four Winds Growers (they retail at Summerwinds, OSH and Lowe's etc). My experience with their trees has been great. I learnt about them on GW and lots of folks have had very good experience with their trees. If you choose to purchase from a particular place, please do share the information and pictures (of your container) too! Good luck!!

Check with your local agricultural extension office. Here, they have fruit tree sales, and if yours doesn't, they may know who's growing them. You might be able to do a google (or Bing) search for citrus growers in your state, that would give you the growers, who would be able to tell you what nurseries they sell to. It might not be citrus season in your area. It is here, and all nurseries have them, but they don't have them most of the year.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Great info and feedback all around. Regarding Gold Nugget, I have one that has been in ground for about 6 years from a 5 gallon nursery tree, trifoliate rootstock. It is only 6ft tall with 6ft width. Just another data point. Mine is from Durling nursery. Where did you get yours kentc? Questions for all you Bay Area growers: Do you have any problems with freezing? What varieties do you recommend for your climate, especially for container growing?
