The Scots are great Pines. My first experience with how nicely they can be shaped happened at the Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon. While there, I watched one of the workers pruning Pinus sylvestris in the Niwaki-style. While pruning, he would periodically rub the bark to exfoliate the trunks, bringing out and enhancing the red.

Here are a couple of wonderfully sculpted larger specimens that I observed at the Oregon Garden during the ACS Conference last month. . . .

Pinus sylvestris 'Albyn'
a nice blue ground cover, similar to 'Hillside Creeper.' Since it doesn't form a dense enough mat, why not open it up and show off the reddish bark? I've seen this listed as 'Albyn's' and 'Albyn's Dwarf.' I settled on what was listed in the ACS database. I'm not sure that it's correct.

Pinus sylvestris 'Mitsch Weeping'
I was taken with this tree the moment I saw it. Not only does it weep, but the branchlets and needles will twist. Fortunately I found a small one at Rare Tree Nursery during the conference. Now I have a reference as to what I can make it look like over the next decade. Again, I've seen it listed as 'Mitsch's Weeper' and 'Mitsch's Weeping.' The sign says 'Mitch's Weeper' which is clearly wrong.

The true name for the flatgrower is 'Albyns'

Hostagreencare, the 'Hibernia' isn't a Dutch cultivar, it's found by J. zu Jeddeloh from the Jeddeloh Nursery in Germany.
He found it as a witches' broom in Ireland, and that's the reason why he named 'Hibernia'...
Remember, this isn't a dwarf, it will grow into a little tree.

Don, the 'Hibernia' grows about 15 cm/year, so in 10 years it will be about 150 cm tall and 100cm wide.
Please keep this in mind and save some room for it or give it another place in your garden...

Severn, surprised you remembered that plant. Perhaps it stuck because it cost what sandwich costs?lol? Its under warranty, just a shame that it was so potted bound...leading up to its demise. Its got the yellow brown hue to it now. I probably just wait and see what it does over the next couple months.

Heya Will, that is Picea orientalis 'Tom Thumb Gold'. I think a witches broom from 'Skylands'. It needs some shade but not too much shade, a delicate balance and so far it has been happy three years hiding behind the relatively 'huge' 'Little Ann'.

I finally was able to find a Gold Coin, and a sizable one at that. These seem very hard to come by in my area, but found a grower in MD within driving distance. Its 2 feet tall. I paid $60 for it. I think I got a good deal on this. What do you think?

Yeah, I'd say you got a good deal. Mine was about half that size, but in a pot the same size as yours. Mine was rootbound so yours will likely be twice as bad. Make sure you get the root ball completely untangled before you plant it!
