Can I grow sweet mandarins on the Southern California coast?

I live in Oceanside a few blocks from the beach in Sunset climate zone 24. I would like to grow some mandarins but everything I've read indicates that the fruit won't be sweet because the climate is too cool.
I believe the fruit of a coastal mandarin will hang on the tree longer before it gets ripe than a fruit of the same variety grown inland but will the coastal mandarin ever get as sweet as one grown inland where maximum temperatures are higher?
If you've successfully grown sweet mandarins close to the coast under Southern California's marine layer, I'd love to hear from you. Also, which varieties have worked best for you?

Thanks,

Dennis
