Is this scale? Aphids?

I just potted an owari satsuma last week and when watering today I noticed a few areas on the bark that looked like tiny little mollusks. The size of a lady bug. When I flicked them off the bark, bazillions of tiny little white critters crawled out of it.

AND, all around the tree, if you look really closely, there are the same dust-sized little white things crawling around and they're moving FAST.

There were a few spiderwebby looking things on the plant when I bought it, and the nurery man said it was "nothing." But now I suspect I brought something home.

The nursery just told me they would take it back if I wanted to, but he also said that if it IS scale it's pretty common and easy to get rid of.

What do you think?

Should I

1) Take it back?

OR,

2) Keep it and treat it? (I will say it's a lovely, 5+

year old owari standard with a 2" thick trunk and it was their last one of the season.)

What would you do?

Sounds like scale.

If it was my tree, it would be returned. And I'd inspect -- very carefully -- any tree they offered to substitute.

IMHO -- scale is challenging to get rid of.

I alo noticed some sticky clear sap dripping on a bunch of the branches this morning... is that a tell tale sign of scale?

Another question that would help me to understand is... are scale just a nuisance, or are they life threatening for the plant or affect the vitality?

It's an outdoor plant... if that make any difference.

If your sticky substance is honeydew, which is what a lot of the typical "sucking" type pests excrete, you should beable to find the actual insects. You'll usually find them on the bottom side of the leaves, and in the tight joints where the leaf stems join the main stems. Be mindful that plants can excrete sap also, so glops of sticky stuff could be sap, and not honeydew. My Pachira does this, as well as a few other plants. As for your plant's decline, I suspect a light or watering issues. Pachira likes bright light, and will shed leaves if put in low light conditions. Also, overwatering and underwatering are big culprits of leaves that go from yellow to brown to floor. If you're using peat based soil, like Miracle Grow, you must know that after 6 months, it begins to break down, eventually turning into a very poorly draining soupy mess. This leads to a poor root system, which leads to rot. The plant then can't take up enough moisture, giving signs of underwatering. The typical response is to water more, which rots the roots more, until your plant dies. It'd be helpful to know your light situation, watering scheme, type of soil, fertilizing plan, etc. Joe

Hi Parrothead. I love your screen name. Do you have macaws? I really don't know much about in-ground growing citrus. Living in Il, mine are kept in containers. But after reading your soil's pH, it's way too alkaline. Citrus need acidic soil. 4.5-5.0. You'll need to amend soil. BTW, did you test pH in both front and back? If so, is pH more acidic in your front yard, or equal? Growing citrus in containers is less complicated because your dealing with smaller areas..Vinager, peat moss, Ironite/chelate, and Epsom Salts keep leaves nice and green, but I don't know if this would work for large trees. If it does, I haven't a clue as to dossage. I hope someone, especially those who actually grow in-ground citrus trees, will chime in with a solution. Since your trees are insect-free, receive iron, and well-established, I haven't a clue what can be causing leaves to yellow and drop. Other than fertilizer and Ironite do you spray or use chemicals either via foliar or directly in soil? I wish you the best, hope you resolve the problem. Do not use "RTU" (Ready To Use) spray bottle versions of any pesticide. Always use concentrates to be mixed with water. My "Bonide" Neem Oil concentrate (70% pure) doesn't specify for Scale, but is safe to use on Adeniums. (There are 99%/100% purity brands available, such as "Dyna-Gro".) "Safer Soap" does list 3 types of Scale, and It also refers to "Scale crawlers". This is also safe to use on Adeniums. (Both of these are OMRI certified.) Depending on what type of Scale you're dealing with, you will probably need to treat your plants up to 3 separate times in order to kill newly hatched pests. With "Hard Scale", I've literally had to use "Hand to Hand Combat" with them. I had a Gardenia Bonsai with every Centimeter of bark covered w/ Hard Scale. I meticulously went over the entire plant with a toothpick and pocket knife, prying and killing every individual little bastard; one by one. Then I sprayed it off w/ water, and finally treated it w/ pesticide. I am proud to say, I was successful! Some people will say, when dealing with Hard Scale... HY, you are not alone! We've all soooo been there. And time after time, we go there again. And again. We persevere and find joy and beauty in our gardens before the next infestation or plague...which occurs right before another frantic forum post and more pest eviction or disease fighting strategies and then more joy and beauty. We gardeners are nothing if not resilient. For the record, your garden looks 1000x more glorious than mine during its low points. PAOK is gorgeous! Somewhere, I have a stack of really embarrassing photos of my garden at its worst. I'll see if I can dig it up so we can all shudder together. Ha, ha. I'm firmly in Jeri's camp where chemicals are concerned, but I also know that sometimes, one-big-hit before organic methods can produce immediate practical and psychological relief. IF I hit a few plants with something toxic, I'd be very selective and then water thoroughly after success. These days, I'm more likely to cut something way back, douse with the strongest but least damaging environmentally friendly solution (Safer products and others) and repeat while bulking up natural predators and plant nutrients. My current antagonists are cane borers that I'm battling with Elmer's Glue All. For #%}€*&$! aphids, I use insecticidal soap. For squirrels, I cage small plants and rose starts. For years of persistent blackspot or rust, I rip out the rose and choose a resistant variety. I (almost) never use toxic chemicals in my garden, but once or twice, I've been cornered into the unthinkable. There was once a ground wasps nest in the parking strip and under our sidewalk where oodles of kids run by and strollers roll by all day long. It couldn't be easily or safely removed, and the situation was looking very risky. My husband and I resorted to chemicals. I mourned each time I saw the straggling wasps trying to return to their poisoned and blocked nest. In TX, I know that fire ants can be a real danger in a garden. I once stepped in a nest. Enough said. I hope more forum members from your region join in with suggestions. I wish I could offer more in the way of advice, but my climate and my pests are temperate rainforest ones. Scale insects, when allowed to build up a large population, are life threatening to the plant. And as you've observed, their numbers can grow pretty darned fast.

If you could get a picture of these things, we could identify them for you quickly. There are many different species of scale, but they are fairly easy to name.

Those nursery workers should be ashamed for selling something like that, as well as for suggesting that they aren't anything serious.

Hey Rhizo,
Unfortunately, the zoom on my camera isn't working and I can't get a good picture.

But I am pretty sure it's scale, after looking at other pictures online.

I guess I just ought to return it. But it's a beautiful tree... a standard that's been beautifully pruned into a ball and the main leader cut to about eye level. I was hoping to vary the shapes and sizes of my citrus in my pot landscape... so I hate to let it go without a fight.

And for clarification, he said that they're fairly easy to treat... I don't think he ever said they're not serious. But thanks for the appropriate level of indignation on my part. :-)

Sounds like your citrus has mites AND scale. If you're sure it's not mealy, you can treat, but it's going to require work and time. For one, keep it away from other plants. Scale and mites are highly contageous. If you handle the tree, wash hands with soap before touching another plant.
I honestly don't think mites and scale are hard to rid, but why buy a new plant that's infested? Do you agree? If it was Mealy, forget it, it'd have gone back day 1.

Spoke again with the manager today and he has always said I could return it. When I told him I really liked the size and shape of the tree, he said that he would just order me another one direct from Four Winds. Should have it this week. Problem solved.

I may still buy a bottle of organocide, just to get familiar with this product JUST in case more critters show up.

This is an extremely reliable nursery and I don't think they did anything deliberately to mislead me. Probably just someone needs to learn more about citrus pests, is all.

But I'll be watching my plants closely. 3 of my 5 new citrus came from them, but only the one tree so far shows any sign of trouble.

I've isolated the bad tree from his friends... LOL... and in a few days it'll be gone and replaced with a hopefully pest free tree.

Kristi, was the manager the guy you dwelt with in the first place? the person who said you had nothing to worry about, regarding webbs? At least he's not trying to rip you off by offerning to replace the citrus. I wonder what they'll do with your tree.. At HD, they'd put back on the floor, and resell to some poor, unsuspecting customer..seen them do it when I worked there.

Nope, the manager is the whole nursery manager. The guy I talked to when I first saw the cottony scale is one of the many sales people and stock people in the store. Most of them are seasoned gardeners or certified landscaper-types, but just as many of them are seasonal help. Truly, I think it was an honest mistake.

Anyway, it's an independently owned and extremely well regarded nursery in my area. My guess is it won't be resold... it'll be given away as a freebie to one of the employees to nurse back to health. (They have a section by the employee entrance for those.) Part of me is secretly wondering if he'll just offer to let me keep it... maybe I can isolate it from my other trees (I have a 1/3 of an acre) and see if I can clean it up.) Silly, huh? I'm SO addicted to these plants. LOL

By the way, totally off topic, but what genre are you hopeful about writing?
