kadasuki, I wouldn't take a chance. What variety is it?

I'm in 7a and am going to leave some in ground this winter. They are close to the brick and in a fairly protected area and I have black landscape cloth over the ground in all my gardens (I hate weeding!). I'm only trying it with a few of my really hardy varieties, Chas. Grimaldi, Jamaica Yellow and Frosty Pink. I have enough of them that it won't bother me if they don't come back. I wouldn't try it with my variegated brugs or doubles and I've been told that the Versicolors are also fairly tender.

Well,I just started cutting my brugs last night just kills me.Dug dear Charles up and brought him in.I started leaving my dear friends out last yr.Did not loose anybody.The only reason I dig Charles is he was the first one I got from a dear gal.several yrs. ago here on garden web.Judith
Her colection had become so great at that time she had talked about experimenting with leaving them out.
Mine were huge this yr.I cut them all the way back and put a flower pot over top of them then cover in mulch completly.
when finished looks like giant ant hills.
I have several different pinks they all look a like to me. ,Charles ,some white pale yellow,white pale yellow.
I will have back ups just in case but still have a row to cut down it is covered in tobacco canvas as we speek.

I've had my brugs in the ground for 4 years-I've only had 2 plants not come back(zone 7b North Georgia).Only one unknown pink did not come back.I've heard They'll come back in zone 6.Just pile about 1 foot of mulch over the stumps(take plenty of cuttings),and you should do fine.Mark

Kadasuki, I'd suggest taking some back-up cuttings just in case. My brother lives in Zone 6, and some of his come back and some don't.

I live in s BC which of course is much cooler. Mine have all come up from the roots -- but so slowly that they barely have time to flower before summer is over. I take some cuttings and leave the rest. I think this year I will mulch heavily and in the springtime, scrape all of the soil off to see if it will warm up faster and get them going. Or just get some cuttings off to a good start and them plant them out.

Read the text, it gives a good overview of the factors that go in to determining whether or not a plant may make it in any given Zone.
I agree that in Zone 6 you are risking losing your plant by leaving it outdoors, even well mulched. Take cuttings as backups and try it, you may get a pleasant surprise if you happen to have it in a microclimate within your zone.

I am hoping that mine come back next year. I wacked them down and put the cuttings in the bucket with a couple of air stones and a heater so at least I will have those. For the mom plants that are still in the ground I built a 4ft cage and filled it to the top with leaves....we will see!
