Will my Citrus get shocked from outdoor temps?

I was wondering.

Wow, I am so tired, I hope this makes sense everyone.

I have learned how to acclimate my Citrus trees to the outdoors when it comes to putting them in full sun. But I never thought to ask if the temps outside, as long as they are above 40 at night and warm days are going to cause shock to them. After all, all our plants are use to stable temps indoors. With the extreme changes in this ime of year, will not our plants drop leaves from shock and stress due to the climate change and humidity change? Will they get use to the outdoors since I can not control the humidity, or temps like I do in doors? As long as they are taken in on extremely cold nights?

Will they adjust to the temperature outdoors and the changes in humidity if they are put outside? getting them acclimated to the sun is easy, but to get them use to the outdoor temps, that is a different story..I am about to put all my plants outdoors ASAP.

Your question is NOT possible to answer because I have no idea where you are (Greenland, Canada, North Carolina??). I got all my citrus out a few days ago (But mine went from a cool/cold garage to outside.) I would hold off if overnights are averaging below 40F.. If temps are chilly without freezes they should be okay, but don't expect any growth. Plants outside are also having to get used to windier outside conditions (regardless of temps) so try to protect some from wind (against a building might help). As you say, watch SUN or they might burn untill acclimated. Even though I hope to be beyond serious cold, I listen to the weather in case I have to drag them into the garage once again.

Lets just say that I live in the part of the country where the cold likes to stick around longer than the warmth..Lol
I live in New England. Mass. to be precise. And my plants are use to being in a well ventalated, warm, 70 by day and 60's by night humid room, in front of sunny warm windows.
So the thought of putting them outside excites me, while at the same time I worry they will not be able to handle the extreme temps even though the nights stay above 40. Will they be ok? Will I get leaf drop and shocked plants? Last year I waited until almost the end of May, but because I am having such a problem with insects on them this year, I would love to stick them outside way earlier than usual. Does this help in anyones ideas. I just don't want my plants to go through shock from such a stable enviroment indoors. I know If I waited until JUNE really, it wouldn't be a concern, but I need to get them outdoors ASAP. does anyone have good sucess from bringing them from indoors to outdoors early in the spring with good results?

Where are you located? Must be somewhere near me. I'm in Alachua County and we had some crazy temperature swings here in late Feb and early March. One of my trees has also lost its leaves and I was thinking the temp. swings could have been a factor, though some here say it could be root rot. Citrus doesn't like temp. fluctuations. Did you have the wild swings from 80 to freezing and back over a few days?

I feel so lucky that I decided last Aug to build my sunroom addition VS a greenhouse. It is 16 1/2' X 18'- framed in lumber with 13 1/2' cathedral ceiling. Windows facing south & east are 5' high..& 2 (wish & had 3 now) skylites facing south. It looks like a regular room addition, but since there is no heat or AC it is considered an "enclosed porch". I have glass Fr doors going out to it from my kitchen where there was once a window to yard. If I need more heat, I just open the door a crack to let house heat go in. I also bought a really cool ceiling fan that has heater in it. The fan mode blows air down & the 'heat' mode actually shoots out heat & blows it up & around & down the windows. I also insulated the walls, ceiling & floor. I put a drain in floor which goes to gutter downspout for any water that overflows on floor which is called spreadrock (hard as concrete). I have a tv in there now & we had dinner ther lately LOL----LOVE IT. My bf put speakers on wall & hooked to my stereo. Total cost for materials was about $7,000. I bought everything on sale & did it myself (with help from friends for rafters). Outside is finished & I only have to trim windows & finish mudding the drywal. I will paint walls either high gloss or semigloss white. A friend gave me mirror panels --8"x 6' that I will use to reflect more lite. E efficient flourescent lites on timer for winter. I'm so glad I did this. All my furniture will soon go in there so I can refinish my hardwood floors. Hopefully will finish that before plants have to come in for winter.

Thanks Josh for the reply! I have them under the ledge of the patio, so they are getting some wind protection. I could put them in the greenhouse away from the fan and they would be better protected wind wise, but I think it may be still too hot for them in there? Yes Josh, I love blood oranges! I have another blood named Vaniglia Sanguigno I got from Logees when I was on vaca in CT, but it is not in fruiting stage yet. I just think blood oranges are so beautiful! And i am also excited for tasting a finger lime. The vesicles are round and the juice is suppose to just pop in your mouth. I was reading some fancy chef article or something that says because the vesicles are round and closed until bit into, the release of flavor in very intense and tasty along with the added addition of texture when it pops open. Again, the article explained it much better than I am here. I hope they have the red finger lime in the US one day. What is considered "too hot" for newly transplanted citrus? Mike, I know the worst part is the change of seasons and hauling the citrus in! I did this for years. But now I have the greenhouse and it has made a tremendous difference! For the first time i did not have to worry about leaf drop due to indoor lighting issues. If I remember correctly Mike, you have a greenhouse, but still bring them in around February when it gets real cold? I kept mine in the greenhouse all winter with heat of course. I only kept it in the low 40's on the coldest nights, sometimes even getting to the upper 30's, experimenting since it was my first year, and the citrus had no issues! I was suprised! Definitely reacted much better to the greenhouse than all the years being in my house with lights. Although I did not have the greenhouse up yet when Sandy came, which was a good thing because who knows if it would of gotten destroyed. But when Sandy came, I had my one room in the house filled with all my citrus and figs and other special plants so I would not lose them in the storm. Then, I had hauled them all back outside just to have them all hauled back inside less than a week later because of our freak Halloween snow storm! I am sure you had part of that too Mike? Laura..Hello..Mine are still outside)) I hope to leave them outside until the first night it gets into the thirties..They are all blooming out. They WILL burn if you leave them in the full sun at mid day if you are not careful. Here are a few pictures of sun scald on some of my even perennials from just yesterday after being inside or covered by burlap or leaves..Not goo. I always prevent this on my citrus trees because it sneaks up on you within days beyond the middle of February..I figure if I can get a sunburn on the beach like yesterday then my plants can too in the same sun angle. This damage was all from yesterday on my black grass, jasmine, azalea, mock variegated orange and so on...So I throw a net over my trees and leave them that way for a week or so. Even a huge cut piece of bug screen over trees works great if one can not find dabbled sun under trees or a place where they can not stick them some where else other than morning or late afternoon sun. Mike, next to your name, it says you live in Michigan..LOL..is Michigan a city in MA???
How many citrus do you have? Is it possible, (this is a LOT of work) taking citrus outdoors 'X' hours each day then bringing them in before night? Or, maybe you can haul out the citrus with insects and leave others in??
It's too soon here in Il to even think about taking plants outside..Last weekend, it was in the 60's..now they're talking snow..We've had two major snowstorms in the month of April, so taking plants out now for Illinoians would be a disaster..I thought about setting my Gardinia tree and Geraniums out..both can endure very cool temps..
If the temps in MA stay above 40 at night, and you want to take citrus out for the year, for the time being, do you have a sheltered location out of wind? If anything cold wind 'might' burn leave..Keep us posted, Mike..Toni

Hey Mike....I put my plants out all week last week and don't plan to bring them in again until next fall. I have tons of new growth and my plants seem to be thriving. I'm in Maryland by the way. I think it's alittle colder up there in mass though. as long it is above 40 I leave them out. Good luck
