Not just any latex paint. Flat indoor white latex paint mixed 50/50 with water.

I reflects the sun, it breaths and borers hate it.

Do I need to clean the trunks with something before painting?

Hi bt, you only need to clean the trunks if there is a lot of dirt on them. A think layer of dust or dirt splattered do to rain or watering is no problem.

Many borers attack and enter at soil level and work their way up. Its recommended that you clear away the soil around the trunk 1-2" deep and paint the trunk below the soil level. After the paint dries you should then put soil around the trunk to the level it was before painting.

The cheapest way to do this is to go to a big box store. Tell them what you are doing and make sure they use Interior Flat Latex Paint. Exterior is a no, no as it contains a fungicide that is not good for your trees. Ask them to put 1/2 gallon in a one gallon can. When you get home fill the can the rest of the way with water and shake it well each time before use. This will get you a gallon of Tree White for the price of a quart. If you catch a sale you may even do better.
