Wanted - Alfalfa Meal Source

Opps! Posted to the wrong forum.

There have been many post concerning Alfalfa Meal or pellets for making the Alfalfa Tea. Could someone suggest a good place to purchase either the pellets or the meal in the Raleigh area. Also, is this the right time of year to start with the Alfalfa tea or should I wait till fall?

Alfalfa tea is used all during the growing season.
I get Alfalfa Meal at Bartlett Milling company in Goldsboro. They sell all types of animal feeds...like for horses, dogs, goats etc. You might try the yellow pages for Raleigh or call the Vet school at State to see if they can recommend a place locally.

ncgardner - let me know if you find one close to Garner. I found a landscaping supply in Fuquay that can order it, but I'm not sure if there's a quantity limit on that.

Now is the time if you are going to. do not wait until fall. Probably any feed and seed store will have them. I put it on mine July 4th and had forgotten how really really really bad it smells since it had been a few years. Mine had been percolating about 7 or 8 weeks! You can scratch the meal or pellets straight into the soil. The tea just gets to the roots faster. Heather, I am surprised you burned your buddleia with the tea! I didn't know you could do that!

I use pony pellets from a feed store, the horse size ones work well too, they're just bigger. When they get wet, they swell up and fall apart and voila, alfalfa meal. Don't use rabbit pellets because they have salt and molasses in them (the molasses is ok, the salt is not).

Yes. The pellets are easier to find and cheaper to purchase in my experience and they work well. If you water them right after they are put down the pellets disintegrate and become easier for the plants to digest. If you don't water them they become good rabbit food--which is what the pellets are used for by people who have rabbits.

There are a couple options in Garland if you're on the east side of DFW: Don't know if the Rohde's organic products will be much less expensive, but the nursery alone is worth a visit if you are looking for natives. You can check prices and reviews for much of their Greensense line on Amazon. Edit - looks like not all products available at the brick & mortar are offered in the on-line store. There's also the old family-run Roach Feed & Seed in downtown Garland which is an authentic feedstore, but caters more these days to urban pets and gardens.

Try your closest feed store. Alfalfa pellets are common animal feed. Not so sure about the meal. I have found cottonseed meal at my local seed/farmer supply store down here in Fayetteville. I use it to fertilize my lawn since real organic lawn fertilizer is unavailable here in Fayetteville. Theresa

Thanks to each of you. Has anyone ever tried the alfalfa extract? Wonder if it would do the same with less used each time? Interesting. Like you use vanilla extract. Same idea and might be easier to store.
