Minneola Tangelos

I am absolutely addicted to these. as in i have to give myself a daily limit! due to the fact that i'm so *ahem* fond of them, i was concidering giving growing them a go. My problem: where on earth do i find one?! i also read that they cross pollinate well with grapefruit. My mother is interested in a Rio Red i believe. do you think the two would work well together?

The 2 should do well together.
I love them too, I have a tree and its been producing for the past couple years. The dissapointing issue is that the season for them is so darn short.

I agree the 2 would do nicely together. Remember that Minneola will color up and look ready early, but wait till Feb. or later and they will keep getting sweeter. in March, oh my. yum

UCR states that it produces more when cross pollinated. Mine is 20' and in my backyard with other citrus. I would say it produced 300 pounds last season, about the same amount as the Washington Navel that is next to it. My tree has fabulous sweet tasting fruit but I've heard some say Minneolas are tart tasting. I have heard it takes warm summers and cool winter nights to get the best tasting fruit. Modesto should have that just like Upland. Why don't you get another citrus? The correct number to have always seems to be "One more".

Not sure if you have a question or not? And yes, nurseries will routinely pot plants up as needed. You may have caught the nursery just potting up some of their 5 gal to 10 gal pots, which is why they may have looked about the same size. Actually, the smaller trees will acclimate to in-ground planting better and quicker than the bigger trees (15 gal, 24" box, etc.). Patty S.

I soak my trees until they run through. My potting soil is pretty well draining. And remember, the only water my trees get during the late spring through early winter is what I give them via the hose. We don't get rain here in S. California except in the winter and early spring. And, my relative humidity is normally very dry (except when we get the occasional monsoon pushing up from the Gulf of Mexico). So, my situation for container citrus is very different than yours. If yours are receiving rainwater, you need to make sure you're not over watering by hand. I use full strength Foliage Pro, since my containers are outside all year 'round. Most container folks will cut back to 1/2 strength during the winter months, when their trees are indoors. And, if you have decently draining soil and a pot, you really only need to check down as far as your finger will go. If you are suspicious of the drainage, however, I would try to get down to the bottom of the pot with a long stick. Patty S.

In ground , in Florida this tree produces fruit best eaten in January .

Because it is crossed with a Duncan grapefruit , you will get the wonderful cold hardiness but also the very large size of a mature grapefruit tree .

A Dancy tangerine cross is what gives this fruit it's dark orange color , delicious taste and bell shape .

I have all three of these trees in the ground in my grove and the Honeybell or Minneola Tangelo as it properly called, is my favorite .

You might just be able to get away with growing it in zone 8 with some protection . Mine survived many nights below 32 degrees and a night of 8 hours of 18 degrees this year - our coldest winter in 25 years .
