Help with ID & Pruning Help

Does anyone know what kind of celmatis this is??

Also, how/when can I prune it? We moved into this house Spring 06 and it wasn't pruned so I didn't prune it again this year, but it is really woody/sticky underneath all the new growth. The flowers look a little droopy compared to how they looked last year.

Any help is greatly appreciated, I'm very new to this!!!

Hi Nancy,
I'm not sure what variety this is but it is either prunung group 2 or 3. Group 2 plants bloom on old wood in the spring and then again on new wood in the fall. Group 3 plants bloom on new wood during the summer. To get this plant back on track I would prune it as a group 3 plant - This winter after the plant goes dormant or very early next spring I would cut it bact to about 12 to 18 inches above the ground. Remove all of the old growth from the trellis. As soon as the plants sends up new shoots in the spring, fertlize it and water it in. A three to four inch layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant would also be usefull. For more info go to chalkhillclematis.com. They have info on the care of clematis.

It certainly does need to be cut back hard next spring. It will really help it and look much better getting rid of all that dead wood.

forget about the lean.. improper planting ... if you want ideas on how to prune .... then we need a closer pic of the tree ... when young.. it could have been easily trained.. to a higher level.. i fear... that you might not be able to accomplish such.. though i cant focus deep enough into the picture to tell ... these things are a dime a dozen .... replaceable for around $20 or so .. here is your mind set ... enjoy it for a year or two [or less!!!].. learn about it.. hack on it.. try to get it into some preferable shape.. and if it doesnt work out.. GET RID OF IT .... and plant your own mistakes.. lol ... it was improperly planted.. improperly sited.. and most likely.. improperly cared for .. when i moved into my first home.. i spent 5 years trying to save every nightmare the prior owners left.. and then the day i got rid of the last one.. was the happiest day of my life at that house.. there is no reason to live with a problem... ken ps: and then you have a reason to get the cherry you want.. and plant it far enough form the driveway.. that it wont be a problem ... BTW ... there are flowering cherry that never have fruit.. and the fruit tree ... so if you want fruit.. i suggest you find the FRUIT forum.. and ask them.. which is best for your area ...

Looks very healthy in your picture and to me appears to be a type II, very likely HF Young. Fertilizing with a high nitrogen fertilizer can give a plant with loads of foliage with little to few flowers. Try fertilizing with a timed release fertilizer that has a high phosphorus content and low nitrogen. There are tons of them out there to choose from. I would also suggest pruning the plant back to stimulate new growth since as the type IIs age, they get woody stems that tend not to bare flowers. Cut back now to about one foot or so and remove any deadwood or stems with no leaves. Keep the plant fertilized and watered well the rest of the growing season and see if next year you get more blooms! Good luck.

OK, I talked to my contractor guy about what they (we) use on knotweed: He likes to go with Milestone, which is aminopyralid. That's one of the herbicides that often don't break down in composting systems, such that compost later used in yards and gardens can be phytotoxic. But in this usage, no plant material is being collected and used for anything, so this is not a concern. Spraying the plants when in full bloom is helpful. Just looking at my notes, I see imazapyr scribbled down too, but not sure if that was a different conversation. Anyway, like I said, I have used glyphosate to kill knotweed, and yes, this took more than one app. Aminopyralid, on the other hand, can control such tough plants as the knotweed, Canada thistle, and some others, in one pass, so to speak. One more note about aminopyralid: In reading up to refresh my memory just now, it quickly became obvious that there have been numerous cases where seemingly tiny amounts of residues from this herbicide have gone on to kill crops and plants. So other than really specific targets, which somewhat ironically appears to consist mostly of vanquishing tough invasives in "natural" areas, this item ought really not to be used, made or sold!

dad had one that dated back to the 1970s .. and what happened in the intervening years.. was that the plant was no longer in full sun ... being shaded by all the trees on the street ... you might want to start a post in the perennial forum ... to see if anyone there has any ideas ... provide a pic of the whole.. and give a bit more history .. if any ... another thought.. is lawn fert.. high nitro.. might cause a plant to forego flowers.. in lieu of vegetative growth .... if it happens to be near the lawn ... sure looks like what i call jackmanii .... but i dont know if that fits within gals suggestion ... finally.. location matters.. when talking about time of flowering .... big city name wouldnt hurt .... ken

I agree about hacking it back. It is difficult to tell the exact variety of clematis you have from the picture you provided. It definitely does have bare legs which is quite common what happens to type III clematis when they are never trimmed back.

There are a lot of purples that are very similar. Might not get a perfect id.

Nancy as BorS says, there are a lot of purple colored clematis out there. A close up might help but then again it might not. Better to try and fail then never try at all!
